My Uncle won a MM in WW1. He was a signaler and had to repair phone lines, guiding the artillery, under intense bombardment.

Well worth the read.
I find anything written by Peter Burness well worth reading. This book gives a much clearer insight to what went on behind the scenes to cause this tragedy, albeit the general story is well known. Well worth the read for anyone interested in more than just the bare historical facts.
