This historical 8 x 10 inch glossy photo of the Andrea Doria is from a personal collection of hundreds of ships and shipwreck photos produced in the late 1970's and early 80's. All photos have been protected by glassine envelopes in a temperature/humidity controlled environment and they look as glossy as the day they were produced. The Andrea Doria is one of these mythical wrecks that all divers wish to dive one day. In a water charged with particles and swept by strong oceanic currents, she lies on her starboard side in 240 feet of water. Despite the low visibility, the diver can grasp the size of the ship as soon as they hit the hull. The upper decks have collapsed down to the Promenade Deck, which is now slowly collapsing. However a stroll along the gangway will remain an incredible moment. Towards the stern, the swimming pool reminds us of the enormous size of everything. Located near the middle of the wreck, lies Gimbel's hole, an opening in the hull that allowed the recovery by divers of the main safe. Penetration is possible with caution because the structure is giving way. A visit to the big dinning room and the chapel are possible but dangerous. All the decks further down are left to be explored, but be careful. This wreck has taken the lives of thirty divers.... mostly due to their will to bring back some of the famous china or other artifact proving their passage on the wreck. Marine Life is not extensive on the wreck itself, but large pelagics cruise in these waters (big white, tiger shark, dolphin, etc.).
