Adieu Galaxy Express 999: The Movie

Worth the wait for this epic anime classic from Leiji Matsumoto!
For years I waited patiently for this Matsumoto gem to reach American shores for an official Blu-Ray release. Finally, my prayers have been answered! Not only do you get the film with the original Japanese/subtitles or English dub, the included extras are stellar which includes a complete trailer collection & liner notes on the film written by anime fan aficionado Tim Eldred (Thank you Tim!!!)! I can’t say enough about the picture and audio quality, far better than what I was used to on VHS when I repeatedly watched Adieu back in the 80s and 90s! I picked up on minor details I hardly noticed in previous video releases and love being able to enjoy the sharp, crisp quality of handdrawn, hand-painted cel animation! Colors and film grain are sharp as well, thankfully no digital noise reduction! You can watch with Japanese 5.1 surround or the original Japanese mono track. However you chose to watch this anime classic you won’t be disappointed! When my delivery arrived I heard a slight rattling in the packaging. Somewhat concerned that the disc was loose or damaged I opened the blu ray case to find the disc was intact. A little card was included, representing Tetsuro’s Galaxy Express 999 train ticket! That little bonus left me tickled pink that Discotek media would include a replica of Tetsuro’s ticket! In the past year I’ve been adding more classic anime on Blu-ray and DVD to my library, titles I thought would never see a release in the us, including Space Runaway Ideon, Aura Battler Dunbine, Votoms, Baldios, Great Mazinger/Mazinger Z, Galaxy Express and especially a Blu Ray release of the Captain Harlock epic anime film “Arcadia of My Youth!” If you’re a fan and a collector such as myself, reach out and let the distributors know via email that you appreciate their hard work! They appreciate the feedback and will encourage more title releases of those hard-to-find anime titles you once had in your old VHS library. And to the good folks at Discotek and all the staff involved in this stellar release of Adieu Galaxy Express 999; THANK YOU!!!!!

The 999 calls back Tetsuro, Maetal and friends for another go-around
Tetsuro is called back to the 999 and taken to Maetel to conclude their business with her mother and the mysterious Faust. Harlock and Emeraldas intervene again in another planet killing before a new cosmic entity threatens them all. Another visit to the Leijiverse and more heartbreak and sorrow for all involved; sacrifice, revenge and unrequited love rule the day. As morose as it is, it's still another impressive outing with decent picture quality on the BD. I'm glad I'm getting to finally see these other shows after falling in love with his Yamato work in the late 70s as a 10 year old. Recommended.

A must for any fan of anime
This sequil to the original Galaxy Express 999 is excellent. The artwork is of the same quality as the first 'three nine'. If you have seen the first Galaxy Express 999 movie, then this one is a 'must see'. A lot of the questions left unanswered by the first movie are answered in this one. Although many would say Galaxy Express 999 is dated, this is still one of the finest anime movies I have ever seen. Although no one particular aspect of Galaxy Express stands out as the best in anime, when you combine every thing together, story, character's, artwork, music, etc, you have what amounts to one of the all time classics. This is one of those you will watch over and over again! Another nice thing about this video is that you are not totally lost if you have not had the opportunity to see the first Galaxy Express 999. But, if you get a chance, the first Galaxy Express 999 is equally as good and well worth finding and viewing. I would have to rate both Adieu Galaxy Express 999 and the first one, Galaxy Express 999 as my two favorite anime videos.

The Saga Continues
More of a continuation than a sequel, Adieu Galaxy Express 999 gives the story of Tetsuro's father, who bears some distant resemblance to Darth Vader (must be the helmet and the cloak). We get to meet some new characters in this coming-of-age story, and delve deeper into the mystery of the mechanical people. Crystal Clare is missing from this trip, replaced by a snobbish mech named Metal Mina. There is the usual mix of beautiful scenery, science fiction action, and philosophical musing of the meaning of existance. This is not as good as its predessor, but is still highly reccomended. Take the time to watch the movie all the way through in one sitting. Of course, Captain Harlock and Emeraldas will be showing up along the way. All aboard!

Excellent! A must have
The continuing adventures of Tetsuro Hoshino and Maetel is the best thing this movie has going for it. The animation is colorful and bright and the music superb. Very lush and beautiful.
