My Favorite Movie
I didn't realize I'd never left a review, but Chappie is my favorite movie for several reasons. To preface, I watch a lot of movies, definitely more than the average person, and I enjoy movies for all sorts of reasons, but this movie stands out to me because it excels in many of my preferred categories. It also happens to follow themes in sci-fi regarding AI and transhumanism that I find so interesting.I love Neill Blomkamp's work, his high-concept sci-fi is so refreshing and incites a sense of wonder that I only get from Ridley Scott films. District 9 was already one of the coolest sci-fi movies in a long time, but when Chappie came along, I was blown away. The CGI and special effects were incredible. The cast all delivered AMAZING performances.. Sharlto Copley brings Chappie to life, Hugh Jackman makes you realize how badass he is, Dev Patel was the believably naive optimistic brain, and despite not knowing how that would turn out, I fell in love with Die Antwoord as a result of this movie. The story also highlights a personal curiosity, regarding what a soul means and what it means going forward with technology. I envy Deon.I hate that I can't personally fund more movies like this. Please, Neill, please don't stop.

Just watch it...
If you liked District 9, i'm pretty sure you'd like Chappie as well. I dont want to give away too much of the story, so if you dont want to know, please don't read any farther lol.First the idea of AI, robots, we've all seen the films, from blade runner, to robocop, to terminator, to AI, people who review some of these movies have to lighten up. Sure a lot of it is inconceivable, but just go with it, some try to apply it to current technology and dont like the film because this and that's not possible, who cares, just enjoy it lol.Second, the people who dont like the south afrikaan like accent of the thugs, man who cares if they're not speaking perfect english. I'm glad they dont, this heavy accent is great. If you were watching a movie about south central, do you want proper english, or ebonics? LOL. i'd prefer the ebonics, because that's real. Seriously people have to get past these things, plus they have some subtitles pop up just in case you didn't understand, but it was fine.Third, i sort of like Die Antwoord as the small time thugs that adopt Chappie, they have a look that's part trailer trash and small time thugish and actually fit the part well. You will hate them in the beginning, but then you see they're not the worst people in the world. People like Hugh Jackman aka Vincent who will do anything to succeed over Dev Patel aka Deon. You see these types in real life corporate world, because it's true, people will do anything to succeed. So with that said, the story is actually interesting, a cross between robocop, ai, and terminator, maybe bits and pieces to make an interesting story. As with District 9, a statement of class structure and the disparity in them. Even so, Chappie seems to grow and learn right from wrong under the teachings from Yolandi aka Mommy and Ninja aka Daddy. And the ending, just like District 9, leaves some things unanswered so you come up with your own conclusions of which way the world is heading. Would you rather be watching another Marvel comic remake? I think not lol.

Another brilliant SF film from Neill Blomkamp
This is another remarkable science fiction movie written and directed by South African filmmaker Neill Blomkamp.Best known for making "District 9", Blomkamp presents us with a vision of the future in which robots have replaced much of a human police force in an effort to stop rampant crime. They provide the technological "muscle" to help human officers combat heavily-armed criminals throughout an urban metropolitan area set in South Africa. Although the robots are impressive, they fall short of true sentience. The engineer at the military contractor which developed the police robots sets out to create a robot with true full artificial intelligence in which it can think for itself. Done as a skunkworks project, he carries it out alone. However, his creation ends up being stolen by a small gang of criminals who want to use it to steal money. The story unfolds from there with the focus on the robot, Chappie, and its interactions with the humans around it. It is able to learn quickly but it is in many ways the equivalent of a child. The film exploits this in several humorous ways, but it also asks some serious questions about how we as humans might "raise" and teach such a robotic child. The movie is not without flaws and has a few warts with some characters being underdeveloped, and perhaps not all of the situations or dialogue are entirely plausible. Some of the events that occur at the robot company are an example of this. However, it is easy to overlook these in the face of some truly brilliant imagery with the interaction between the robot and the humans. Blomkamp has a keen sense for SF storytelling and making it accessible to audiences with a palpable and visceral vision of what such a technological future might look and feel like. He presents the story and scenes in a straight-forward way to provoke a reaction and make you feel like you are there, whether or not you want to be.There are allusions to a fair number of films, including Robocop and Blade Runner. Some plot elements may feel a bit derivative, but on the whole I found the story to have a very original core told in Blomkamp's unique and trademark style. When the film shines, it is as brilliant as any to grace the movie screen. It is a story about the future and robots, but it is also one about humans, our creations, and our flaws as a creator.
