Great Book to Improve Your Paintings
This is a fantastic book for people already familiar with oil painting. It's not a "how to paint" book but rather "how to improve your paintings" book. I've already tried some of the suggestions and I'm really happy with the results. The book itself is beautifully printed with shiney thick paper and beautiful color images throughout. The writer is entertaining as well as informative. I very much enjoyed reading it.

It is filled with amazing information about painting and examples of his many years ...
Gregg Kreutz’s new book Oil Painting Essentials is a real page-turner! Really, every page is packed with so much “essential” and vital information that I couldn’t put it down. It is filled with amazing information about painting and examples of his many years of experience as a teacher. The book contains wonderful examples and demonstrations that illustrate the ideas he wants to convey and in language that is very easy to comprehend. However, what really strikes me is how Gregg has simplified the enormously complex subject matter in his inmitible easygoing style that gets right to the heart of the matter. There is no fat in this book. Rather each page is filled with his years of experience brought down into palpable essentials that can be put into practice immediately. In addition the information is delivered with generosity, clarity, precision and great humor and wit. I love this book!!! Brilliant

NOT FOR BEGINNERS BUT INTERESTING TIPS
I did not want to dowload this book, but it seems I did it with the tricky click. it is the second time it happens and I will not be reimbursed so I have gone through the book. I think this book is more for the ones who took art classes as readers are I guess supposed to already know how to draw and to paint. No material guidance here. That being said the author goes back to the main problems one can encounter and I like the fact that contrarily to many others he show what Not to do and not what to do. Thus there are 6 ways one should avoid to render shadow on an apple for example. It is a very difficult goal to explain how tk paint especially through a book. I think practice is the key. Contrarily to what people think to master painting you need an eye and a lot of practice with determination and regularity. There is no secret. You have to learn and you can buy all the books on earth about how to to, you need to train, train your eye your hand and try try try no matter what. Sure predisposition or talent is important, but work is more important. This book might help, but it is not the key that in a few hours will make you an artist. Picasso worked a minimum of 8 hours a day everyday. Whatever some people think of his paintings he worked hard and had understood very early a few concepts. Not everything is in books, but even if this one might be a good reading and gives pieces of advice when you are stuck in your process or rendering it is not the miracle book you might hoped for. Such a book does not exist.

Absolutely wonderful.
The paper uses in the soft cover seems a little cheaper then in his other book. That being said the context in the book itself is wonderful. I finished the whole book in two days and will defiantly keep going back to it when I'm working. Easy to read and full of good technical advice. I would also recommend Problem Solving For Oil Painters by Gregg Kreutz, On Becoming A Painter by Robert A. Johnson, The Big Book Of Oil Painting by José M. Parramón, Capturing The Moment In Oils by David Curtis and Robin Capon, Oil Painting Secrets From A Master by Linda Cateura, An Artist Teaches by David A. Leffel, Alla Prima 2 everything I know about oil painting by Richard Schmid and Drawing Lessons From The Great Master by Robert Beverly Hale. These are some of the other books that I have found to be very helpful.

Get 'Problem Solving for Oil Painters' instead
His first book was much better ... one of the best painting help books. This one is okay .. some good tips but meh overall. His paintings over the years have not improved. There must be a lesson here about taking care to investigate color palettes and moving forward.

This is an excellent companion to the original book
I have a lot of books on painting and drawing, but I have always said that if I could only keep one, it would be Gregg Kreutz's "Problem Solving for Oil Painters." Now I have a problem--I have two oil painting books that I couldn't part with. This is an excellent companion to the original book, discussing concept and process essentials as they apply to portraiture, landscapes, interiors and still lifes. A pleasure to read and look at, I look forward to putting a lot of wear and tear on this book in the studio.

What a great reference book
What a great reference book . I stopped painting for a while and his book breaks it down in very easy steps to follow. Its a good refresher , straight to the point and applicable to any subjects possible. Easy to understand and to apply . This is a book I will keep at hand while painting. Awesome for the price .
