Excellent collection.
Marc Brown's Playtime Rhymes is an excellent collection for any parent or caregiver working with toddlers. It contains 20 rhymes, all beautifully illustrated and accompanied by small drawings depicting the actions that go with each line. There are older rhymes and modern ones, all guaranteed to provide plenty of opportunity for interaction with your young one. It's never too early to learn classics such as Wheels on the Bus, or I'm a Little Teapot. This collection provides quite a few seasonal rhymes as well, which would be important for any preschool or toddler story time leader looking to fill out a themed unit. I am always looking for new finger plays for story time, and out of the twenty in this collection, I found three that I was not familiar with and that will likely be showing up in my story times soon! For a young parent new to the world of finger plays, and just now learning about the importance of rhyming to the development of young brains, this collection would be an important first step. The illustrations in this collection are unique, with an old fashioned feel. The afterword gives an explanation of how this unique look was achieved, and the book does include a table of contents. The small boxes which depict the finger actions might be hard for some to decipher. I wish they could have been just a tad bit larger. I also wish this could have included more rhymes, but isn't that always true of a good thing? We always want more. This is a certainly a good thing for any parent of young children looking to jump start their playtime by inserting a few extra learning moments into their daily routine. Playtime Rhymes is an excellent choice for any parent and child to share together.

An excellent collection
If I could, I would buy a copy of this book and give it to every new parent in my town. It's exactly what parents need to sing and play little finger games with their young children. If parents had this book to use with their children from the time they were infants, children would start school knowing everything they need to know to begin learning to read and do math and think. So help us teachers, folks. It would be a great gift for all new parents.

Not just rhymes, but finger plays to go with them!
A delightful book of 20 finger plays, with their rhymes, and drawings of each movement for them. The author (Marc Brown, who created the Arthur series) painted cheerful illustrations of children on gessoed wooden panels, which lends a lovely textured look to the finished book. Most of the rhymes are familiar, a couple were new to me, and a few I haven't heard since I was in Kindergarten! You'll want to have your own copy of this one. A great gift for preschool teachers! Highly recommended for ages 1-5.
