Prophecy (1979)

Good for its time
The only way to really review this movie is to get into Mr. Peabody’s Wayback machine, and return to 1979. In that film era, films like this were a staple. A company polluting the environment, monsters arising from the damage, and someone going in to uncover what is happening. Early in the film, the raccoon attack was typical of what was available to use in the 1970's. Some scenes looked realistic, and others laughable. They toured the timber processing plant with no protective helmets on. The manager of the plant finally saw what was happening and tried to atone, claiming he didn’t want to know. And the ending formula driven for films of this type. Basically a decently made film for the time it was made. Very dated now.

She Will Find You!
Now that I've had the opportunity to watch the Scream Factory Blu... The film has NEVER looked better. The clarity is breathtaking - the forest is nice and rich with vibrant colors and detail. The night scenes were what I was worrying about the most, but I was in complete awe... you can see that Scream Factory has gone to great lengths to do the film justice. The black levels are top notch, so no need to worry about any black crush. The creature effects (for better or worse) were crisp and clean with enough natural film grain to keep from being "muddy" or blurred. The sound is nice and dynamic - Leonard Roseman's creepy cinematic score is utilized very well. All the dialogue is clear and consistent as well. I noticed some subtle forest sounds that weren't present in any other release I've seen of the film. This could have easily been branded a "Collector's Edition" from Scream Factory - There were some hefty interviews with some key players, both on screen and behind the scenes. It was so nice to listen to everyone speak candidly on the production of the film - Also included are some very neat Radio Spots, Original Theatrical Trailer, and a photo gallery. (Not to toot my own horn - but one of my very own photo edits that I had restored about a year back even made it into the gallery as well!) Thank you Scream Factory for doing the film justice with this spectacular release of a film that's near and dear to my heart.

A good fright
I have to admit, I first saw this years ago when it first came out and it was the talk of town. A John Frankenheimer movie that was also a horror movie? He was known more for his classics like "Birdman of Alcatraz", "The Manchurian Candidate" and "Seven Days in May", to name a few, all of which were very well received and big hits. But "Prophecy" was widely panned, I think because it was different and wasn't quite what people were used to seeing from him. Maybe the adults didn't like it, but I can tell you that most of the teens and young adults absolutely loved it. While the movie would never be anyone's idea of a classic, it certainly has a lot of good spots, even though, some of the things, especially the music the kids were playing, is a little dated and which I could do without, the premise of the story was quite frightening. I'll never forget the absolute terror I felt in the scenes when they were driving through the woods in an almost pitch black road, I jumped at every little bump and shadow they passed, you knew something was going to happen, but just not when or exactly where. I've watched this often having not seen it since I was a teen and finding it online again a couple of years ago. It's slow in spots, I think they tried to do too many things with the story after the opening scenes, but once they got going, it was non-stop action.

Great late 70’s 🧀 cheese. I love my horror movie cheese.
I liked this movie. Hard to capture old Hollywood in a bottle but this movie sure does it! The last 25 minutes are the best but I loved the whole movie. The part where the ‘prophecy monster’ has the old Indian in its mouth and shaking it. 😂priceless. But the special effects and sounds are so 70’s. Love it. Check it out. You won’t be disappointed…or maybe you will. 😉

Great for its day.
I really enjoyed this when it first came out and enjoyed it just as much this time. Nostalgia made me give it a 5. It has poor sfx compared to today but overall still very entertaining.

Good old 70s horror movie night
The acting and story are decent. Tension is built on a satisfying curve toward a classic 70s horror finale. It's not going to win best picture but makes for a surprisingly passable horror movie night for adults. There's a lot of gore and some disturbing scenes, so don't let your kiddos watch it unless you want them to turn into mutants.

awesome
Saw this movie way back in the 80s on tv when I was just a kid. Scared the crap out of me. Ordered it and watched it and wow. Still as cheesy and fun as I remembered. Thank you for making me smile and reminding me of my youth. :)
