HAVE A COKE AND A SMILE? MAYBE I'VE HAD TOO MUCH!!!
The best thing about Diet Coke is basically the best thing about Diet Pepsi, you can find it anywhere and everywhere and it is always basically the same product. To a consumer that means one may safely buy and consume this hermetically-sealed product with the reasonable expectation of not getting sick from the local water. This is the advantage of the can over the fountain. Canned "Diet Coke" also will not go flat as fast as a two liter or even a twenty-ounce bottle. Now, all the hermetically-sealed products [cans and bottles] have expiration dates on each individual container, further insuring the safety and freshness of this universal product. As far as contents go, the exact ingredients are on the can. However, unlike Pepsi's informative website where I found the milligram amounts for all ingredients per 8-ounce serving, Coke's website [[...] dealt more with the history and lore of Coke products. Where Pepsi's site clearly stated exactly what was in the can, I can only assume from the list of ingredients on the can of Diet Coke, which is an almost exact match of Diet Pepsi's, that one will find roughly the same amounts of caffeine and sodium in each. At Pepsi's website we quickly see, that there are 30 mg. of sodium and 24 mg. of caffeine per 8-oz. serving. A 12-ounce can = 1.5 servings or 45 mg. of sodium and 36 mg. of caffeine. The exact amounts of these ingredients are important if you have family members or guests with high blood pressure [sodium] or young children prone to hyperactivity [caffeine]. It is important to remember that fountain drinks are reconstituted where they are sold and no bottler [Coke or Pepsi] guarantees the exact amounts of caffeine or salt (or anything, for that matter) in the drink or the purity of the water used in reconstituting the fountain product -- a great argument for cans and bottles! As far as which brand is best, some think Diet Pepsi goes flat quicker than Diet Coke. Maybe, however, the smallness of a 12- ounce container would negate any difference if it exists since it is quickly consumed. As for myself, I rarely drink carbonated beverages, but when I am on the road with the kids and we all need to rehydrate, I know that canned Diet Coke [or Diet Pepsi] is safe and effective and, most of all, available wherever we might be. [PS- I am not affiliated with Coca-Cola, Pepsi or any other product.]
