Literally the worst graphic novel I've ever read
The Boys is terrible. It is - terrible writing, nothing makes sense, endless cheap sensationalism, bad art work. In short, there is no reason for anyone to read this.Examples:Starlight - The sole purpose of Starlight is to introduce an innocent, blond, pretty, all American girl and then pointlessly degrade her. She's accepted into the 7, and on first meeting with Homelander, he and 2 other 7's drop their trousers and demand blow jobs to let her in the group. Bc why not humiliate a new member and guarantee they hate you. In her other scene her costume gets adjusted to show more skin. Bc of course.Butcher / CIA head - Every time they meet, they have sex while telling each other how much they despise each other.Wee Hughie - Hughie is a weak, waffling wimp with no apparent positive qualities. He seems like a pure loser. Yet for no apparent reason, Butcher recruits him and brings him into his presumably elite gang.Compound V - A compound exists that instantly turns normal people in super people. But for some reason, the people that control the compound - the government - don't take it themselves, because who wants to be super?Mini Nina (or whatever her name is) - a midget Russian who has apparently killed more people than anyone in the world, who everyone is afraid of, and who really likes giant dildos. Oh, and Butcher kills her by putting an explosive in the dildo. Of course! The book itself is mostly about Butcher and his gang mindlessly stumbling through adventures accomplishing almost nothing. Nothing that either they, or their antagonists, or the other random characters that show up do makes any sense at all. There is no real character development and no real plot. The sole purpose of just about every inch of progress is to provide another excuse for over gory, over sexual sensationalism. So if you like cheap, brainless sensationalism - sex, violence, nudity, etc. - that is poorly drawn and has no remotely intelligent quality - this is the series for you!

I think I actually like he show better
I bought this because I missed it when it was coming out, too many books already on the pull list and after loving the show I had to read source material but I have to say unlike the Preacher I liked the show better I think the story was tighter and the protagonist more like able. A little disappointed this first volume just kind of flew around the room like a balloon and then fell flat at the end

Wow. this comicbook is WAAAAY more violent than the TV show.
Ennis and Robertson made one helluva violent comincbook. There is no way they can show these graphics in a public forum. The TV show is watered down 10X compared to this comic book. You have been warned.Good read though. I recommend it to anyone that has the stomach of the gore and sex.Darick-with-one-R does a great job on the artistic visuals. He honed those skills on the excellent Transmetropolitan comic book, which I highly recommend any lover-of-science-fiction to read.

Disappointing
One of the few exceptions where the screen adaptation is far superior to the original. I loved the show but hated the comic. I found it so aggressively homophobic and misogynistic that I found pages difficult to read. Even if you take out the cringe factor, the storylines are hard to follow and have very weak character development

A truely Original take on superheros
Dark, Twisted, Funny, Heartbreaking, Raunchy, and surprisingly Realistic considering what we are learning about celebrity culture today. If you are up for that much reality, check it out.

Definitely buying the next one
Excellent read. A great supplement to the Amazon series though it would be better to say the Amazon series is a great supplement to the comic. Characters are complex. Story is not one dimensional. Art is excellent. Just love that dog Terror. I did find the sexuality a bit much but oh well, perhaps I’m just getting old. Tons of fun.

Start off strong (Vol 1); but tapers off rapidly...
Volume one of this series is a classic case of flattering with the premise, only to deceive with a huge let-down as the series progresses. At the outset, it comes across as something that has analogues to the themes expressed in the Watchmen, and the protagonist suffers an unspeakable tragedy perpetrated by one of the out of control supes. He's recruited in a vigilante band led by an ex-intelligence operative named as Butcher, to rein in the supes. The first volume has great gags based on a superhero loosely modelled after the Batman, and is eminently readable. Unfortunately, the remaining volumes inexplicably careen towards catering a juvenile or immature adult audience, and while some explicit content is undoubtedly very funny (the "moustache" the morning after was hilarious), it becomes gratuitous and tiresome. The extreme violence, that packed a punch in the first volume, soon loses its resonance. The nadir comes at a point where the protagonist's girlfriend grovels and begs for forgiveness for a situation that's no fault of her own. This follows a prolonged confrontation between them about the said situation, and our hero let loose with a choice of demeaning sexist labels (apparently he felt like he was play-acting and didn't even know why he was saying those things, but seriously?). This isn't even towards the end, and we just lurch our way through more inanities and stereotypes regarding the backstories of the rest of the motley crew. My recommendation is to read the first volume (or two if you are feeling generous), and then forget that that the series existed.

Do you know a butcher near you?
I bought this for my boyfriend and he really liked it! So much so he is looking into buying some Compound V for himself! I told him it’s not real but he said he knows a guy called the butcher and thinks he can help get his hands on a vial of the stuff. He says he works down town by the old Woolworths building which is now an Iceland. I can’t help but wonder what his super power might be if he does manage to get hold of a vial though... Invisibility? Laser vision? Super speed? Super strength??? The possibilities are endless! Just like this series!

How comic books used to be
Boys is a great example of how comic book aimed at adults used to be. It's gritty, hard hitting and contains a mixture of parody, satire and straight talking in just the right ratio. The characters are over the top yet also relatable, and there is absolutely no regard for political correctness and over sensitvity. Character can be crass or violent and yet make compelling arguments against overreach and violence. And because this is an older comic it do not push its politics down your throat like modern Marvel or DC.If anything, Boys show how far the comic book industry has fallen, and what can be done when comics are written by artists rather than activists. There are strong female characters, strong minority characters and an LGBT sub plot, but none of it feels forced or artifical. These characters have a part to play in the story and weren't added in as tokens to pander to publishers. They comment on racism, sexism, homophobia, and corporate greed while placing the story above all else.A good read, though possibly too much sex and violence for some people's taste.

Brilliant, brutal and totally original
This comic series captured me straight away. It is such an original and interesting take on the superhero genre. At times full of wit, at others gore but at all times writing that is thought provoking. Brilliant.
