Human Cannonball Audio School of Fish

Solid sophomore
Overall, I would say Human Cannonball was a solid follow-up to School of Fish’s s/t debut album. Does it fall short of surpassing its predecessor? Yeah. Does that make this a bad album? Of course not. Still I have to agree that it’s not quite up to par with the first album in terms of consistency. “Take Me Anywhere”, the only single off this album, is no “3 Strange Days” but good nonetheless. My personal favorites are “Fountain”, “Everyword”, “Kerosene”, and the instrumental closing track “Lament”. The rest of the tracks are at best good and at worst mediocre. The one aspect of this album that I feel is a step-up in comparison to the first is the rhythm section of bassist John Pierce and drummer Josh Freese. Their predecessors Dominic Nardini and Michael Petrak were sufficient but I feel that Pierce and Freese do a much better job of complementing Michael Ward’s awesome guitar riffs. Speaking of Ward, I would to close this review with one final thought about him and singer Josh Clayton-Felt, the other core member of SoF.Had they chosen to keep going despite their lack of commercial success here, I honestly believe the two of them could have been just as big as other songwriting duos as let’s say Morrissey and Johnny Marr of The Smiths. Unfortunately, the chances of them ever getting back together are obviously zero seeing as how Josh tragically succumbed to cancer in 2000 but not before releasing a couple of solo albums that I definitely plan on buying after listening to his SoF catalog.

1 of the best bands in the 90's
One of my favorite albums. Too bad it was underrated.

School of Fish was a great 90's alt
School of Fish was a great 90's alt. rock band. They should have been a lot bigger than they were.A lot of people think Human Cannonball, their sophomore effort, wasn't as good. I respectfully disagree. It is as good and easily the equal of their first release. If you enjoyed their debut, you'll like this one too.

One of my favorite albums of ALL time
I was born about the same time as rock n roll and, in my humble opinion, this album is damn near perfect. It rocks, it has intelligent lyrics, it has clean, beautiful melodies blended with straight up rock. It's well mixed and engineered, too, but it's the music that matters most... and these are simply great songs that you will sing in your head (or out loud) for days, after listening to them. Fountain and Kerosene both blow me away, and who can't love a song like Fuzzed and Fading?

Excellent 90's Alternative music
Please buy this CD! SOF is one of the most under-rated bands in history. There are lots of catchy songs in this compilation, such as "Take Me Anywhere" (their biggest hit), "Everyword", "Blackout", etc. SOF was a bona-fide Alternative band, and a fine one at that. It's a shame they didn't get the recognition they deserved so that they could have gone onto bigger and better things.

Why are there so many CDs for sale?
I really like this record. Why is it so disliked? I really am curious. There's catchy melodies, good riffs. This is straight ahead rock. Like so many, I grew up worshipping Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains & Nirvana. Although very different in sound, this album should have been enjoyable to a similar crowd. Maybe I'm crazy...whatever.
