Type 1 Diabetes in children, adolescents and young adults
This is an invaluable book for anyone who has Type 1 Diabetes or has a family member suffering from the condition. So why did I hesitate before buying it? Because, before I read it, I thought it would be just another book on diabetes, written in the same old formula by another health professional for whom diabetes is the day job while families with a diabetic child live with it day in, day out.If that sounds cynical maybe it's the result of sitting in on too many sessions with the 'diabetes health care team.' However if they're getting to you too read Dr Ragnar Hanas' book. I've learnt considerably more from it than all the clinics and advice sessions that we've been obliged to attend put together. It should be recommended reading for anyone whose job it is to work with people suffering from diabetes or their families. The writer's whole approach to the subject seems not only genuinely empathetic but illuminating. This book is packed full of information in a clearly laid out informative text. He is able to deliver medical information in a concise, accessible way. And that's the thing. He explains things. He doesn't assume patients won't get it so he'll just throw in some patronising prose. He covers everything thoroughly to help the reader make sense of the subject. When our young son was diagnosed we were on holiday in Wales and met a wonderful nurse who helped us more than anyone else has since. In Dr Ragnar Hanas' book, underpinning the scholarship, there seems to be that same quality of giving hope and encouragement by treating families as people and not merely patients or data in some health service system. The author advises that you don't need to read the almost 400 pages cover to cover - I did. As a parent with a sick child I would never recommend this book to another parent if it wasn't worth having. It definitely is worth having.David Parker

Cannot recommend this book highly enough
This is essential reading for any parent or adult with Type 1 Diabetes. It is by far the most helpful resource I have ever had in the management of my daughter's diabetes. My daughter was diagnosed at the age of 4 nearly six years ago. I still refer to this book now when I have questions. Like other reviewers have said, it is not only for children or young adults, this book would help anyone with Type 1 Diabetes. Knowledge is power when it comes to the management of this condition. Without a good understanding of how insulin works and what the body is doing as a result of having Type 1 Diabetes, you stand little chance of being able to make quick and effective adjustments to manage the condition well. This book gives you the vital knowledge needed to manage your condition well. Before owning this book our diabetes team were the leaders in all decisions made and I simply followed without knowing why we were making changes to insulin doses, I never questioned their decisions. After reading this book the roles reversed and I became the decision maker with our diabetes team backing up my decisions. You are living with the condition 24 hours a day, no one knows you (or your child) better than you do, no one is in a better position to know exactly what is going on than you provided you have the knowledge and understanding. Empower yourself to manage your diabetes, this book is the tool to help you gain that knowledge and understanding, don't rely on others to make decisions for you without you knowing why those decisions are being made and if those are the right decisions. I cannot recommend this book highly enough, I would never be without it.

My Diabetes Bible
Purchased this for my job role. Excellent resource. If you can't find what you are looking for in relation to Diabetes in here then it's not actually Diabetes related at all!Excellent value for money. You will have this accompaniment with you for life if you are a Diabetes Specialist or someone who has an active interest in Diabetes for whatever reason. Highly recommended.

The Best Book On Type 1 - An Absolute Must Have
This book covers EVERYTHING and is so easy to read. It's written in a helpful and informative way and has an excellent index. Three years after my 11 month old was diagnosed this is still the book I reach for in those moments I have a worry or question. The table on starvation versus insulin deficiency ketones is worth the price alone. Especially at those high ketone 3am moments. This is 100% the book to get on diagnosis. It is comprehensive and reassuring.I would disagree with those reviews who say it is too much for the newly diagnosed. This is essential reading.I would recommend once you get your head around this book you try the books 'Think Like a Pancreas' and 'Using Insulin' if you inject insulin or 'Pumping Insulin' if you use an insulin pump like my son.If you are a parent of a child with Type 1 looking for more support then I wholeheartedly recommend the wonderful childrenwithdiabetes UK group.

The Type 1 Diabetes 'Bible'
My 4 year old son was diagnosed just about a month ago and whilst all the leaflets they give you in hospital are useful, I wanted a book to refer to that went into more detail about the condition so that I could feel that I had all the knowledge possible to enable me to care for my little boy's diabetes. This book was recommended to me by our diabetic specialist nurse and it covers every aspect of the condition, going into great detail whilst being written in a clear understandable way. I have found it invaluable and has greatly increased my understanding of Type 1.

A thick heavy book crammed with everything you would need ...
A thick heavy book crammed with everything you would need to know about diabetes. Not a sit down and read item - but definitely a go to item . It has been such a comfort to have this in the house as we learn about dealing with our daughters recently diagnosed type 1 diabetes. It's a scary time but does get easier with knowledge and experience.
