Color Mixing Bible: All You'll Ever Need to Know About Mixing Pigments in Oil, Acrylic, Watercolor, Gouache, Soft Pastel, Pencil, and Ink

I was pleasantly surprised by the Color Mixing Bible, it had more to it than I could have hoped for! I bought it to help ME make better choices in the acrylics I was about to invest in but, as a drawing and painting teacher, I have used it to help students in preliminary exercises with pastels, my advanced students have used it for setting up their pencil "palette" before starting assignments, my graphics students, who are into cartooning, have snatched it for the ink mixing section, the "subject mix" section has helped some of my Fundamentals students understand what to look for in making a formal analysis of artists' palettes, the book is new and already lovingly abused! Ian Sidaway has provided clear and consistent visual tables of results that have helped me and my students make better choices the first time with fewer of the unhappy accidents that occur in the haste of classrooms and deadlines. I particularly enjoy the "Watchpoints" that offer tips and caveats about certain pigments and their behaviors. I strongly recommend the Color Mixing Bible to artists that work in different media; sometimes we get stuck mixing in a medium that just doesn't respond as expected because we are less practiced in it. This book allows the opportunity to make visual comparisons between media as we work.

This is my second copy. My first one was lost. Cannot do without this boon. It has every medium and great mixed colors. Very easy to use. Perfectly organized!

I found this book to be very helpful in color mixing. The charts especially give a practical way of getting down to actual mixing. The separate categories of watercolor, acrylic, oil, etc are handy. The brief, but exact descriptions on light frame a useful addition to the actual mixing. The only thing I would have liked to see is knowdedge about how to mix the colors to create certain effects likek shading or muted colors.........

This is a really great guide for beginners or those who are curious on how to mix colors probably to get a certain shade. For me specifically, I have trouble mixing for skin tones with basic colors, and this gives it all and really helps!

This is my go to book for color mixing. The book has color charts showing various color mixtures of oil paint colors - taking the guess work out of which color to use in creating the same or similar hues. I have a food eye of color but with all the various oil colors available on the market, it's easy to loose sight of how each will perform when a second color (or even a third) is added. The Masters usually used a very limited palette. This was due to many factors, cost, time in grinding their own, or having apprentices doing this, and availability of the raw compounds or their own previous training or preferences. Today, we have hundreds of oil colors to choose from. This book helps you get back to the basic colors to create endless possibilities of color.

This book makes a handy & quick reference for my painting studio. It’s easy to look something up quickly when your hands are covered with paint, but you still need to get an answer on the spot!
