Poseidon, the brother of Zeus, was god of the sea. He could either keep the sea calm or raise up storms and tempests to drown even the best of sailors. Poseidon carried a treident and would ride across the ocean in a chariot pulled by horses. Horses were sacred to the god and some myths say that he created them as a gift for the people of Athens. Poseidon was also known as the "Earth Shaker", who was responsible for causing earthquakes, usually as an angry response to someone's wrongdoings.
