Stone Roberts is a master. No wonder the Metropolitan has purchased his work. The tableau of Grand Central Station, some of which he painted upside down due to its size, is not in this book that predates it. His themes are classical, yet contemporary, ageless, populated by friends and family as models. Splendid.

Just Great
His style and technique blends some sort of Dutch realism with the present day. And he's just great. And inventive and accomplished. You won't be disappointed.

Beautiful Art
A collection of Robert's beautiful paintings, including Still lifes, Figures, portraits and flowers. Mostly in color, with studies and preparatory drawings. Biographical essay, good to read. I recommend it. There is a new updated edition of this book.

Beautiful work-nice art book!
Actually never heard of this artist before but cover art piqued my interest. There are a lot of wonderful examples of figure paintings with elaborate background detail as well as many exquisite examples of still life painting (flowers, fruit, etc) in this book. A worthwhile addition to any art book collection and a great resource for the artist.

Stone Roberts: Paintings and Drawings.
J. Stone Roberts is a contemporary American artist who works in a very precise, traditionally Realist style; I came across this rather nice volume while researching Realist painting. The painting on the cover is a little misleading in that the majority of his works are still life subjects painted almost in the manner of the Dutch masters, but also referencing that American tradition of trompe-l`oeil and the interest in clarity of light which harks back to artists such as Raphaelle Peale and William Harnett. There are a fair number of figure compositions and preparatory drawings included though; some of these are commissions and are - in my view - a little stilted in comparison with his personal projects such as the tour-de-force portrait of his wife which graces the cover.A compact, almost square-format volume, this is a well-presented hardback with 83 illustrations, 67 plates in colour with a high standard of reproduction.Texts are limited to a brief introduction and a short essay which deal with biographical information and some narrative on the paintings, but sadly with no in-depth discussion on his techniques or working methods.A fine book on an interesting artist working in this somewhat rarefied field of study; currently available at good prices and worth adding to your library if you appreciate this exacting approach to painting.
