Yves Saint Laurent

A love story with fashion thrown in
Of the dueling St. Laurent biopics, this is the more traditionally structured, more romantic, less pretentious, and far more enjoyable. It follows the standard rise, fall, and comeback of a wunderkind but at its core, it's a love story between St. Laurent and his long-time business and life partner Pierre Berge.Even though Berge cooperated with the film, it doesn't gloss over the dysfunction and infidelities of their relationship. It includes copious scenes of St. Laurent's drug addiction, mental illness, and mercurial sensitivity. The controlling Berge sometimes treats St. Laurent like a child, usually because he's behaving like one. In this film, Berge remains the supporting character but his tough business tactics and protectiveness make him a fascinating counterpart to Laurent's tortured genius. Is Berge acting out of love? For the money? As the film tells it, it was both but mostly out of love. The film doesn't provide a tremendous amount of insight into St. Laurent's creative process, but it is a delight to see his real creations used in the many fashion show scenes. The scenes in Paris in the 1950s and Morrocco late 1960s transport you to those far off places. The film is also anchored by two fantastic, empathetic performances, and unlike the other film, it feels like it was made by people who believe that St. Laurent and Berge truly loved each other.

YSL enactment.
Interesting film. Well written and acted but not too sure about accuracy. A good evening spent watching it.

Must see!
Perfect! If you love Yves Saint Laurent, you will love this movie. This movie is perfect. I bought the French version DVD without/ with no English subtitles. I do not speak French, but I did not want to wait for this film to come out in America/ USA. I loved every moment of this film. This film is so beautiful. Yves Saint Laurent (2014) is just the right length, not to long, not to short. The cinematography/ lighting is amazing. The acting is perfection. The casting is terrific. This film made me cry. Yves Saint Laurent was the greatest/ best fashion designer/ dressmaker/ couturier of all time. Shows some of the most important moments in his extraordinary life and his beautiful homes. Yves Saint Laurent (2014) shows the importance of finding your true love/ soul mate in your life, no matter what. One of the most beautiful heart felt love stories I have ever see. Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge have a love that is to be envied and admired and aspired to.

Painful and sad
It always seems to be the same....; the ones who are geniuses are also highly self-destructive and their own worst enemies. Painful to watch someone who had everything going for him and literally ruined himself. YSL was one of the great fashion designers and truly made a name for him world-wide. Pierre Ninney delivered a great portrayal of him and it was interesting to learn about the man YSL behind all the glamour. Truly a very sad story.

Don't waste your time watching.
This movie shows the ridiculously shallow life that YSL led. I don't care how many beautiful dressed that he designed, his life was wasted, full of drug abuse and immorality.

The Better of Two Movies
I've seen both versions of the YSL story and I liked this one much better. The clothes are the real thing, there was less sensationalism regarding his love life and the actor who portrayed Saint Laurent made you fall in love with him. He captured the shyness and insecurity of Saint Laurent in a way the actor in the other film did not. If anything, I wish the movie were longer as there was much more of the story to tell, but I'll settle for what was given. Worth seeing!

Painful, and as mesmerizing, as a wreck
Well executed. Beautifully acted. (Niney is very gifted and skillful here.) Difficult to watch YSL's suffering so intensely portrayed. Quelle surprise! It is a French film about an iconic and iconoclastic French designer in the decades of the 50's - 70's. He was a sad neurotic man of enormous talent and prodigious output whose sexuality fed his art. No film could sensibly represent his story without the grimy view of his intense, and puerile, relationships.

No English Subtitles on Blu-ray.
I see that the bulk of reviews are either for the movie itself or the DVD. I thought I would let prospective purchasers know that the Blu-ray release has NO English subtitles, only French for the hard of hearing. Since the movie is all in French, unless you understand or can read the language fluently you won't be able to watch the Blu-ray of this film.

Da vedere!
Film veramente ben fatto!

Einmal gesehen - reicht vollkommen
