Interesting characterisation & story line
Book 1~Bahubali Before The Beginning~THE RISE OF SIVAGAMI BY ANAND NEELAKANTANThis novel talks about everything that happened before the beginning of Bahubali. The story is centred around Sivagami, the future queen of Mahishmathi. It depicts the story when Sivagami was a teenage girl. As in all the Bahubali movies this story also has many characters, which makes it more interesting for the readers. This story is about how Sivagami became a part of the palace officials. In this story, Sivagami hates Mahishmathi and it's king Maharaj Somdeva since her father was been executed by him for treason. This is about her journey from an orphanage to becoming a bhoomipathi of Mahishmathi. You will also read about Kattappa during his teenage life. You will come to know about his family & how he became such a great warrior. The story depicts his suffering & struggle to survive in this master & slave lifestyle. You will experience how he has to take tough decisions in his life. You will also come across Bijjaladeva & Mahadeva. You will come to know about Prince Mahadeva as you have hardly known about him from the movies. The author has described the orthodox thinking in a brilliant manner, the master and slave lifestyle, the cast based designation and ill treatment that was followed during the olden days. As you will expect from a Bahubali book, it has fighting and war scenes poured down brilliantly in terms of words. The story is very interesting as Sivagami hates Mahishmathi then how she became the queen of Mahishmathi. The story ends at very interesting point where Sivagami is declared as a bhoomipathi which makes you think about will she take her revenge or not, hence you will also be waiting for it's next edition.

Well written but not as per my expectation because...
Being a huge Bahubali movie series fan I thought this book should be a must read. The book started off really well and it got me captivated instantly. However as the book progressed instances of atrocities on women started creeping in ..not once but several times. I cant say if elaborating such instances is right or wrong. All I can say that Bahubali movies had ZERO depiction of such cases. Even when there was one ... both the Bahubalis chopped of that guys head(1st movie where Bhalla son was beheaded and 2nd movie it was Senapati). And that makes this fantastic Epic movie so great and larger than life and entertaining. And specially for kids. Which is why I was really surprised how did they take this different approach for the book. I would have honestly enjoyed the book a lot more had there been less elaboration on seduction, molestation, etc. It was really disturbing ...even though its a fiction. Having said that the book is very well written ..no doubt about it and after reading the book you will love the popular characters of Sivagami and Kattapa more and would want to wait for the next book. So is a definite read for Bahubali fans but NOT for kids.

Highly recommended
So, i finished reading this wonderful book, which is a prequel to baahubali movies. And i loved it thoroughly...This book tells the story of shivagami from her childhood days, this is the story of her desire to destroy the kingdom and to avenge her father's death. The kingdom of mahismati has a big secret to it. There are corrupt and cunning officials who can go to any limit for their benifit. There are rebel groups standing against the kingdom. There is a prince who only knows how to use his power. And, then there are characters like kattapa who is highly devoted to his country and to his duty. There is skandadasa who has attained powerful position in the system through sheer hardwork and all these characters being on the opposite side move the story ahead. All these made this a completely entertaining read. The best part of the book is that all the characters are written in such a way that all of them are equally important for the story, you will either love them or hate them but you can not ignore them. Being a part of the series ofcourse the story does not complete at the end of this book and will be continued in the next book of the series, which i now wait much eagerly. The last page ofcourse makes sure you can not stop reading the next book. I loved the book.Highly recommended for the historical fiction fans, baahubali fans.

Very intriguing
This undoubtedly is one of the most intriguing book I have ever read. It is a kind of book which you want to finish ASAP because you can't stop reading it at any point. It is wonderfully written. All the plots, characters, places are beautifully crafted. We you finish this book you keep turning pages to see if there is more as it leaves you on the edge. Can't wait to get my hands on book 2 of this trilogy. This is the first book I have read by Mr Anand and I will make sure I read his other work soon.

Anand is the next RK Narayan in the making
I have been a fan of Anand since the day I read Asura. Here I was, holding a book that challenged everything I had learnt and seen on TV since I was little. His writing style, the narration and the way he weaved philosophy into the story made the book unquestionably unputdownable. The same is case with the first installment in the Baahubali series. I was reading this book every opportunity I had. Anand had ensured that the reader is engaged right from the first page of this book, all the way to the Acknowledgments. The characters came to life in my kindle and in my imagination, and I could feel the aspiration and tension of the characters in the book.Eagerly looking forward to the next 2 installments of this book

A little disappointing but showed promise for future!
The story started interestingly but slowed often and defied logic in many places. Fight sequences especially on a ship seemed illogical and unrealistically prolonged given all other information on that scene. Why would a dangerous pirate be allowed the freedom to move about after capture and allowed the opportunity to jump ship while putting in danger those in charge? Also, who is sailing and navigating the ship through a supposedly very dangerous stretch of the river, while everyone seems busy baiting and interrogating the captured pirate? There was some indication that Sivagami was trained in combat by her guardian in the early part of the book, but very little evidence of this training was on display whenever she faced danger, which was really disappointing. Towards the end when Sivagami is facing the villains who have just murdered the Prime Minister (?) in front of her, is it not natural instinct for any person, let alone a young girl like Sivagami, to run away from danger? Instead she runs towards the victim and danger, when all she had to do was to step out the nearest window to escape, especially when the PM begged her to run before he was killed! Unfortunately she just stood there like a deer caught on car headlights and runs towards the murdered victim. I am sorry to be critical, but I felt that this story had so much more potential than what has been delivered. The lead character Sivagami seemed ready to cry at the drop of a hat, passive and allow things to happen around her and to her without taking much by way of positive action. I wonder if the lead character was a male of the same age, the author might have imagined greater freedom of action? This is the first book by this author that I have read, I hope he will imagine the lead characters (especially female) in adventure stories like this to be more confident and positive in future books. There is plenty of basis for such heroines all around the world including India, such as female warriors, warrior queens, leaders and strategists both in mythology and actuality as my daughters never fail to educate me!

The book does not live up to its title
Unnecessary detailing of characters and incidents fills up pages. Only the section of the titular character, Sivagami and parts of Kattappa was interesting. After the first couple of chapters, the author seem to have lost his way by throwing in too many names and people. Mystery of the manuscript not solved. Sorry, didn't enjoy
