Product Description From the producer of the outrageous AUSTIN POWERS: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME, BUBBLE BOY is the hilarious, laugh-out-loud comedy about a sheltered young man (Jake Gyllenhaal -- OCTOBER SKY) who breaks all the rules on a wild adventure to get the girl of his dreams! Though he's lived his entire life within the confines of a protective plastic bubble and under the ever-watchful eye of his overprotective mother (Swoosie Kurtz -- GET OVER IT), Jimmy Livingston (Gyllenhaal) never thought that he'd missed out on anything, until the girl next door (Marley Shelton -- VALENTINE, SUGAR & SPICE) ran off to get married in Niagara Falls. With the wedding only days away, Jimmy has no choice but to build a mobile "bubble suit" and set off across the country to stop the wedding and confess his love to her! .com Innocuous, innocent, and somewhat idiotic, Disney's bubbleheaded road-movie comedy plays as a farcical remake of the 1976 cult TV-movie melodrama The Boy in the Plastic Bubble. Jake Gyllenhaal is the goodhearted innocent raised in a sort of human Habitrail of plastic rooms and rubber tunnels. To win back the girl of his dreams (Marley Shelton), he steps out of his indoor greenhouse and into a homemade Ziplock bubble suit. It's the usual story: naive innocent bounces down the highway like a beach ball with legs and wins over the wacky supporting cast of soft-hearted bikers, zombielike teenage cultists, and orphaned "freaks" through purity and pluck. The premise wears thin after a while, but Gyllenhaal keeps the film bounding along with goofy innocence and energetic eagerness. Swoosie Kurtz costars as his religious-zealot clinging mom. Watch for Fabio in an inspired cameo. --Sean Axmaker

Criminally underrated
IMDb gives this a 5.8? Really? This is a great screwball comedy, similar to Pee Wee's Big Adventure or Napoleon Dynamite, but it also has a message, namely that a lot of us live in a bubble, not just bubble boy. The acting is great, I love Marley Shelton in this. And like I said it's full of laughs.

Classic
This movie is a true Jake gyllenhaal classic. It has that witty comedy that you can only get from the early 2000’s. It’s so cool to see some of the actors in earlier movies like this before they star in bigger roles. Definitely cool movie to watch with lots of funny scenes.

Roundness wins!
The concept of an innocent boy in a bubble for his entire life to be free of germs is ingenious. The Travolta version is not the same and not symbolic in the way that this one is. Gyllenhaal had a fun role, and his "daringness" and luckiness to be able to accept roles like this early on have helped boost his name and career to his current well respected place in the biz.The bubble itself was hard to make as it had to be customized by special companies who make masks and such, and they had never even encountered such a request before. The bubble was changed about 4-5 times at least throughout the movie. The bubble started off as about 65 pounds and was lowered to around 30 pounds after all the modifications. Gyllenhaal started acting with the 65 pounds on his back initially. He, as the Bubble Boy, Jimmy, wore a back pack which would help stimulate the size of the bubble. The bubble was deflated a bit to help him squeeze through small space.Gyllenhaal is the star of the movie in acting and because he is the main character. His pure innocence, expressions, tone of voice like a child, and movement in the bubble is natural and on cue.Jimmy's mom plays a seemingly flawless overly uptight Catholic mother, and Jimmy's dad is good as an overly laid back father. Their values mesh well to make their bubble boy's personality. The humor is witty, but not over-the-top. Some implicit and more explicit sexual references around the bubble play a huge role. The idea of freaks versus normal people, and roundness symbolizing good and square shaped items representing not so good things play roles throughout the movie such as a round bubble and round room. I cannot think of comparisons, but this was listed as a main theme in one of the extras. The timing of how Jimmy gets to Niagara Falls from Las Vegas does not seem to match up. With all the obstructions Jimmy encounters, there is probably no way he'd make it in 3 days, but he does end up flying later on, so that would cut on time a lot. Never the less, an underrated indie movie by a now well known actor.

Funny, warm and throughly enjoyable film.
I watched this film last night with my two sons and we all thoroughly enjoyed it, laughing out loud at regular intervals. It revolves around Jimmy, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, who was born without any immune system, brought home by his mother from hospital and kept in a large plastic bubble for his own protection. When the film opens he appears to be a normal well-adjusted teenager, playing guitar and larking around. However, he has been dubiously home-schooled by his religeously fanatical mother who fills his head with all manner of strange and warped information about other cultures and, most particularly, girls. As he has never left his bubble, and his father never seems to speak, he has no other point of view to disprove his mother so is in blissful ignorance. He thinks he has everything he needs to be happy, until he sees his attractive, new next-door neighbour, Chloe.Jimmy and Chloe strike up a strange but warm friendship, despite the restrictions of the bubble and Jimmy's mother's insistance of calling his new friend the 'dirty whore next door'. But their relationship can only go so far, in view of Jimmy's condition, so (as she can't have Jimmy) Chloe finds an unsuitable boyfriend and plans a wedding at Niagra Falls. This is the spark that ignites Jimmy who realises that he can't lose the love of his life. So he does what any boy with no immune system would do. He builds himself a portable bubble suit and sets off to find Chloe and stop the wedding. But Jimmy has never been out of the house before and the clueless teen is convinced that Niagra Falls is just a short bus ride away. He couldn't be more wrong and this is the point where the film comes alive as Jimmy stumbles from one strange band of brothers to another, from the back of a motorbike to a train full of circus freaks, meeting all manner of different people from different cultures along the way. He slowly realises that, not only is the world a big and diverse place, but his mother may not have been totally honest with him. This is essentially a road movie/love story. It's 'The Jerk' meets 'The Blues Brothers'. The performance of Gyllenhaal is energetic and we genuinely care about his predicament. But he is supported by an excellent cast which includes Swoosie Kurtz (recently seen in ITV's Pushing Daisies) as his misguided mother. There is also a great little cameo from Verne Troyer as Dr. Threak, the heartless owner of the circus freaks. There is one genuine moment of comic timing to rival Delboy Trotter falling through the open bar in that wine bar and it's when Jimmy walks out in his bubble suit for the first time. He has never seen a road before or a bus for that matter and when one comes towards him at speed the impact is just about the funniest thing I have seen in a long time. We stopped the DVD, rewound and watched it again and it was still just as funny the second time. This is a recommended film for older children and adults who are still young at heart. Miserable old cynics should avoid at all costs.

Laugh Ot Loud Comedy
This is a story about a boy who has lived his young life in a protective plastic bubble. As he matures he falls in love with the girl next door, but she runs off to get married at the Niagara Falls, and so he builds himself a bubble suit and takes off after her in a very funny adventure. The film is from the producer of Austin Powers and the humour is in that vein, but the film rating is only a 12

Fun early Gyllenhaal movie.
This film caused some controversy when released,as it was not shy to touch on politically sensitive issues such as religious extremism, or physical deformity of many different kinds. If you take this as a light-hearted film, then it should not cause offence. Jake Gyllenhaal appears a few years before his star really rose in Brokeback Mountain ,and puts in a good performance here. Swoosie Kurtz plays the mother of the boy in a bubble, and is at times endearing,at times repulsive. You find yourself laughing at things that may offend sensitive viewers, such as the scene where Swoosie Kurtz is baking cookies for her son,and stamps her crucifix-shaped cookie cutter into the dough. Politically incorrect, but funny. The film has a varied cast,to say the least. The acting is good, production values good, but this is not a film destined to be selected by the Library of Congress for preservation. This release features several fun extras, such as an informative short on the design & construction of the bubble costume, and cast comments and out takes from the movie.

really enjoyed this lighthearted film
This is a young person's film with young humour, and very stereotypically American - deliberately. So put aside your judgements and opinions, let your hair down for some innocent childish fun. If you are a fan of Jake Gyllenhaal, you may find this hard to swallow at first, but you soon just can't help laughing along with him, and reveling in his joy for life and enjoying the amusing facial expressions Jake can pull! By the end of the film (and it's a good end - I was laughing and crying at the same time) you will be in love with Jake all over again. This film really cheered me up when I felt stressed and low. Just watching Jake smiling and laughing all through the film is highly contagious - excuse the pun ;-)

Lovely sweet and funny film
I watched this film on TV and loved it so ofc had to get it in DVD. Even though some of the jokes/script aren’t very ‘PC’ it is a very funny film that has some lovely sweet moments and I would recommend for someone who wants to watch a film about someone who genuinely had a big heart and would do anything and go through anything for love.
