Q: Why did my pen begin skipping and not writing at all? I put in a new cartridge and same thing. If nib is clogged, how do I clean it?

A few suggestions for your problem, Warren. Firstly, I've found that cartridges just don't work as well as bottled ink. For cleaning, remove the cartridge, insert a converter, and fill the pen with plain (preferably filtered) luke warm water from a glass and empty it out. Do this a few times until the water coming out of the pen is clear. If you don't have a converter then unscrew the nib, drop the whole assembly in the glass and rinse it in the water, changing the water until clear. I suggest cleaning the nib in this way every time you fill it.

Q: How does it compare to Pilot Metropolitan in writing experience? Which one is a smoother writer?

There are so many variable combinations (ink, paper, nib size...) it's hard to give a definitive answer. I own both pens. My Metropolitan is much smoother than my Safari. Asian nibs are finer, so a Pilot M is going to be more like a Lamy F. If using a good bottled ink with a converter, you may find the Pilot M to be a bit wet. Both write well on copier-grade paper, but you may find the Lamy to be a bit scratchier. Beyond that, it kind of comes down to aesthetics. Do you like the modern lines and materials of the Lamy, or the classic, smooth lines of the Pilot?

Q: How "fine" is the fine tip? How does it compare to the other Lamy tip widths (extra-fine, medium)?

It is not a fine tip in my opinion. It is smooth and has a generous width in its imprint, so for this reason it could easily be called a medium.

Q: Can you change the nib to another LAMY nib of another size?

Absolutely. Lamy nibs come in EF, F, M, B, 1.1 stub, 1.5 stub, 1.9 stub and are all interchangeable. I love the 1.1 stub and 1.5 stub and the extra flair they give my handwriting.
