A Humble Hero!
I was quite surprised that this book wasn’t a Hollywood bragging rights book like some others I’ve read. He was a young man with with so much responsibilities that going into the service came second nature to him. This book is well worth reading. 3-thumbs up👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Loved Audie
I loved Audie Murphy and this is a good representation of what I thought was his life. When he died I cried and cried. So sad.

AN AUTHENTIC HERO.
Phenomenal combat feats by Murphy during WWII. Previously read "To Hell and Back," and this biography broadens and expands upon the memoir in a fascinating three-dimensional portrayal of Murphy's impoverished childhood, abandoned by father, death of mother, orphanage for siblings, enlistment in the Army. Moreover, his saga is continued postwar from decorated soldierly fame to stardom as discovered by James Cagney. An incredible man haunted by horrific war memories.

Complete, concise story of this hero's life.
As you might surmise from the title, “The Price of Valor,” Smith is making a case for Murphy being a case study for battle fatigue as it was called in that era, or what we now know as PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). He does a convincing job. At the beginning of the war, Murphy, most soldiers and even most physicians and psychiatrists, thought battle fatigue was due to a weakness in character or temperament in a certain percentage of those in combat. But during the war, attitudes began to change among the commanding officers as well as medical personnel. They came to recognize that any soldier was vulnerable to the condition and that it was external factors not personal deficiency that instigated the PTSD. One commander was even savvy enough to rotate his troops from the front line back for 3-day rest periods.Murphy helped lift the onus of PTSD and mental illness in general in the mid 1960s. After his own realization of his addiction to sleeping pills, prescribed by his physician, he rented a hotel room and spent five days withdrawing from them. He never took another pill after that. In order to draw attention to the needs of the Korean War and Vietnam War veterans, he did speak out publicly about the US government’s taking better care of veterans and the need to give them benefits for the treatment of PTSD and other issues. It is now 50 years later – how are we doing with that?I highly recommend this book, whether you are a history buff, an Audie Murphy, or just someone who loves a great story.

A Must Have!
This biography covers Audie Murphy's entire life including his severe PTSD and his tragic death. He was the most decorated soldier of World War II, winning the Congressional Medal of Honor and every other medal for valor that this country had to offer and some more than once, also medals from France and Belgium . He went on to become a movie star, and song writer. A must have for any Audie fan or student of history. Let us not forget this amazing and fascinating man. Hopefully someone who is not acquainted with him will get this book. I myself have purchased extra copies to donate to local libraries, so as to acquaint more people with this American hero. Much of the information from this book is taken from ,the epitome biography on Audie, ''Audie Murphy, American Soldier'' by Harold B Simpson. If you can get a copy of that book, do so. It goes deeply into his early life and combat history.

Good Book, Invaluable Man
Any time spent with the incomparable Audie Murphy is well spent. This biography is brief but interesting and well written although some surprising errors in editing undercut the seriousness of the work. The film list included reminds us of how prolific Audie was during his time in Hollywood. The author seems to share the common view that Audie wasn't much of an actor, a notion needing revision.
