Livescribe Aegir Smartpen, Dolphin Edition, Teal Color (APX-00032)

I really, really wanted this pen to work. I am trying to digitise as much as possible, but still need a paper and pen in some situations. I read lots of reviews before buying, I was aware of the issues with pairing and the app, and I persevered through them all. But the insurmountable problem came when the ink ran out on the pen. I ordered a blue ink cartridge as I prefer it to black, (and I must add that finding a blue cartridge was difficult enough, and not cheap). The pen stopped picking up my writings as reliably. I switched back to black, hoping the digital copies would improve, but by this stage it stopped picking up anything except the odd pen stroke. I hoped that it would be a simple fix, perhaps the particular brand of ink cartridge I had bought was the problem, so I laboriously sought out the exact brand that I was originally supplied with (again, with great trouble and expense) but no improvement. At a guess, I’d say the pressure receptor which picks up when the pen is in contact with the paper through the nib is broken. All in all, this purchase was an expensive waste of time. It was fun while it worked, but not worth the time and money I’ve expended on it overall. Save your money to spend elsewhere.

I bought this pen because I take extensive notes at work and I wanted to be able to convert my handwriting to searchable text. I eyed the pen for months and was wary about the negative reviews but decided to take the leap. It was a mistake. I have yet to see any notes successfully convert to text, and in most cases the pen doesn't even record my writing. Don't waste your time and money on this product.App: Easy to install. Help is sparse within the app but the guides on the website are helpful. Settings reset unexpectedly, so I experienced embarrassment a couple times in phone meetings when the pen beeped loudly when it paired. It shouldn't have been beeping because turning off sound was one of the first things I did after pairing the pen.Pairing: It took numerous tries plus help from tech support to get the pen to pair the first time. After that, it connected fairly easily but sometimes I have to use the shortcut on the paper when the pen won't connect on its own. This is annoying but not a deal-breaker on its own.Conversion to text: This NEVER worked for me. I wasn't ready to give up after the first try (or even the second, third, or fourth try), so on multiple occasions I took pages of notes. More often than not, significant chunks of text didn't register in the app at all, and when it did, it converted to gibberish. I have legible handwriting to begin with, and it didn't help if I wrote slower or tried to be even neater. I would have been okay-ish settling for handwritten notes that I could compile even if I couldn't search, but the writing doesn't record at all. This was the only reason I bought the pen. I'm really disappointed.Appearance: Pretty. I'll grant the manufacturer that.Weight: Definitely on the heavy side. It was a bit fatiguing to use for extended periods but I was willing to put up with this if it meant I could search my notes. Too bad.Battery life: Not great. I have no idea what the pen is up to when it is unused in my bag, but the battery is always low if a few days go by in between pairing attempts.Tech support: They respond via chat. They were polite but telling me to write differently was non-satisfactory and did not make the pen record my handwriting or convert it to text any better.Audio recording: Never tried it. Why bother if there aren't any notes to sync with audio?

What's good about this pen: it's lightweight and worked awesome during my first trial. I was able to install the app and connect the pen to both my iPad and iPhone within a couple of minutes.BE WARNED! The pen lost its connection shortly after my second use. The pen's blue light remained on and wouldn't turn off even after many hours (it's supposed to go to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity). I contacted Livescribe and they suggested that I let the pen's battery die and try to connect again! However, that means that I have to wait an inordinate amount of time to troubleshoot a problem for a brand-new product. That's not acceptable, so after hours of troubleshooting, I'm sending the product back.Conclusion: the reliability of this pen was already questionable before I bought the pen. However, I chose to ignore the previous review and I am now paying the price. I really wanted this product to work, but I'm not ready to risk ordering a replacement. At this point, I just want my money back.
