Electric Bicycles: A Guide to Design and Use (IEEE Press Series on Electronics Technology) Review: Very technical and not very usefull - This is not a How to Build an Electric Bike Guide. The Physics of Electric Bikes and Batteries is what it covers. Graphs, charts and the physics of how batteries work. Not much useful information for those who just want to build a bike out of kit parts. Review: Technical Approach - I enjoyed this book, but it may not be for everyone. Good technical coverage for batteries, motors etc. But it is not a how to book. Still a good reference on the topic.

Electric bikes!
A really good overview of the various ways to power an electric bike. The author describes DC series motors (cheap, available, heavy) and the 3 phase AC motors (light, efficient, costly) as well as battery requirements. Obviously we would all like a bicycle that is light, efficient, and can be powered by muscle or electricity as required with no weight penalty: not gonna happen. Electric bikes are for efficient transportation to work, school, shopping. They will always be heavier and glonkier than traditional human powered bikes. but they may fill a niche for those of us who really depend on our bikes to get around.

A little dissapointed
I was hoping for more. Nothing here to really criticize. Lots of design information on batteries and charts on design trade offs. This is a fast developing area and the book is a couple of years old. Economics have change and a lot of components are available very cheaply from China on eBay that change some of the design criteria discussed in the book.

The Best Electric Bike Book on the Market
If you are considering buying an electric bicycle then you should consider purchasing a copy of this book first. This book goes into great detail telling you about all of the basic components which are necessary for electric bicycle. While it doesn't promote a particular brand of electric bike, it does go into the history, different styles and design of electric bike and describes components that are necessary for the novice to understand. Because of the depth on the design and function of the electric motor, and the electric battery system which of the two most important components on the electric bike itself and what to look for if you decide to buy one. I highly recommend this book for anyone that is buying their first electric bike, electric moped or even electric scooter because you will be so much better off understanding the basic components and what they do, and in the long with it will save you money.

fantastic book
Fantastic book writing about all aspects of electric bikes. Technology oriented, which is something i mostly miss. I must say I am astonished this book is writen by an American, and not by someone who is living in a bike culture like Holland. Nevertheless Fantastic book, worth buying and reading on your bed.
