Worth every penny and every minute of your time and effort!
I've used nearly every knife sharpening system out there, including a Lansky Diamond Hone kit. I used to think there was no way that I could every keep a straight angle freehand and that hard-mounting systems with fixed angles for your blade were the way to go. But after watching 'How to Sharpen a Knife with a Japanese Master Sharpener' on youtube several times, I decided to give it a try. If you follow the directions in this video, you will be able to sharpen any knife to a razor's edge. Oddly enough, I've found that the edge on my knives seems to last longer when sharpened via a whetstone than any other method I've tried. This is the perfect kit for a beginner, where you get a double-sided whetstone with two versatile grits. The 1000 grit side lets you set the edge and get things razor sharp, and the 6000 grit side polishes the edge to a mirror finish. This is a mistake that lots of people make with a whetstone; the 1000 grit (roughest side) is actually what sharpens the knife and you focus most of your effort here. The 6000 and higher grits will not appreciably make your knife sharper, they're mainly for polishing the edge and final burr alignment/removal. Also keep in mind that it can take 5 minutes or more with the 1000 grit side when first setting the edge on a knife. Just keep going until you feel that burr form on the edge. The bamboo holder is waterproof and has a non-slip rubber base as well. The rubber gasket that goes around the stone seats it perfectly in the bamboo base. Just soak your stone for about 10 minutes and then get to work. I keep a little squeeze bottle of water handy to wet-down the stone as I work. When first starting out, take your time and move slowly. Don't try to be all fast and efficient like Vincent in the aforementioned video. Keep things slow until you build muscle memory and learn how to keep your wrist and edge angle invariant. I also recommend starting out with an older/junk knife; DON'T dive right in with your favorite WÜSTHOF/Misen/etc, until you get the hang of things.

Great Knife Sharpening Stone Set at a Good Price
After tiring of taking my knives to specialty shops to get sharpened, I decided to try my hand at sharpening them myself. A few Youtube videos later and I was ready to buy my own sharpener and try my luck. Lots of these sets look to be exactly the same (just rebranded), and for the most part that appears to be the case so it really just comes down to price. Some do come with slightly different features/add-ons- I specifically wanted the wood base (it just looks way nicer), and the knife guide (to help with learning the proper angle.) I ended up with this Cutting Edge set and so far I'm very pleased. The set appears well made- the double-sided stone was in perfect shape (no cracks or chips) and the silicone base fit well. The wood base looks very nice and holds everything in place. There's no instructions or even a quick start with the set, but the Amazon listing gave some basics on using the set so that was fine. I tried using the guide at first, but I almost feel it's more gimmicky than anything. Holding the knife at the proper angle without the guide isn't hard at all and actually feels more comfortable. I did practice on an older, beat up knife to get the right feel- once I was confident I moved up to my actual Japanese kitchen knives and even though I was still a little nervous, everything went fine and I once again have sharp knives!

I feel like a professional chef
Maybe I watch too much food network, but I bought this on an impulse. I'm so happy I did. I truly thought my knives were fine, but once you sharpen a few, it makes a HUGE difference and you can't stop until all the knives in the house are done. I had bought a sharpening wheel before at a discount store and this stone is by far much better for the task.
