Three sweet owlets waiting for mommy owl to return
When I was young, around Christmas my mother would leave out the back door and cross the backyard to catch the bus to go Christmas shopping somewhere where there were big stores. She would hire the teenage girl to watch us. While the girl was watching TV, my sister who was 1 year younger than me and my brother who was 4 years younger than me would wait at the window next to the back door for mommy to come home. I was like Sarah. My sister was like Bill and my brother was like Percy. This book touched a chord in me, it brought back a memory of childhood, of waiting with siblings for mommy's return. Reassuring them she would come back. And I loved the beautiful drawings. I think a very young child would like this story with its repeated words of little Bill, the smallest owl.I planning on buying a cardboard book version for someone I know who has just had her second owlet.

Paperback has illustrated pages not in the boardbook version
I encountered the paperback version in my local bookstore during my lunch hour. My son was not even 1 years old yet, but he cried terribly every morning when I left for work and waited desperately for me when the sun sets and I'm not home yet. It was a time when I was working until 10p.m. to get a project done by a specific due date and he'd refuse to go to bed until Mommy got home. When I read the book, it appealed so much considering what was going on at the time, that even though I thought my baby was a little too young, I bought it anyway. The paperback is beautiful and large, each individual page truly like artwork that you could frame on the wall! It was a hit with my son from the first day. However, my husband only read it to him when Mommy is not around once. He started crying at "And she came!" because HIS Mommy hadn't come. Before this happened, we weren't sure whether he understood the story! My son loved the book so much, he often took it and insisted on turning the pages himself. By the time my baby boy turned one, the paperback was looking quite worn. He'd torn the pages a bit, here and there, and we were sad to see the beautiful artwork marred by tape, but that's what books are for, right? To be loved and used. When he finally pulled the cover off the book, we decided it was time to buy a new copy. When I saw that amazon.com had a boardbook version, I immediately ordered that one, as that would last longer than the paperback with my physically over-affectionate 1.5 year old. The boardbook serves its purpose for my toddler to flip through, but I think I will be buying another paperback version when he gets a little older, because the boardbook is short by 10 pages, dropping many pieces of beautiful illustrations, although the words and the story is fully intact. It is also smaller in size, so some of the detail is lost to the eye.Now that my son is 2 years old, he has taken to flapping his arms and bouncing up and down with the baby owls when Owl Mother has arrived. I have no doubts that this book will engage my baby boy for a few years more.

The book is beautifully illustrated and young children will relate to the text.
Bring a preschool teacher, I was already familiar with Owl Babies. So when I saw it, I ordered it for my 11 month old grandson. The illustrations are beautiful. The contrast between the black night sky and off white baby owls is captivating. The text also paints a picture of the three baby owl’s characters especially young scared Bill and a plot all children can relate to, concern about when his mommy owl will return.

The pictures of these three baby owls are adorable, I love the story line, there is a part where the owl mother in GONE, the three baby owls take care of each other, this leads to a discussion on where do you think she went and will she come back?.....lets finish the story and find out.....she comes back!!

Wonderfuf Book for Toddlers and Preschoolers
A special book in a number of ways. My 2 1/2 yr old granddaughter loves it and it held a special attraction for her during a period when she wasdealling with a new sibling. I found that interesting because it isn’t about having a new sibling, but it does deal with the fears of mama disappearing, which is clearly related. The story involves three baby owls who wake to find mama gone and they try to reassure themselves that she is going to return soon. The youngest is not convincedf and keeps repeating: “I want my mama.” It is the essential cry of the young child. It deals well with a common fear of young children, it has wonderful repetition, rich language and yet is not heavy on text. It also has wonderful illustrations that really introduce the concept of perspective.

boring book, similar images page to page
I have to say this book is extremely boring. The lines are not interesting and the images are very similar from page to page. You know little kids look at the images, so my kids are never interested in this book because they are pretty much looking at the same thing throughout the entire book.

Lovely book
I love this book. I bought it to read to my son at bedtime.I bought it because I remember a teacher reading it to my class in my first year of school and remember loving the story and wanted to share it with my son. I wasn't traumatised by the Owl Mother's disappearance or even Percy's concern at one point in the story that a fox 'got' their Owl Mother which other reviewers have mentioned, but liked the happy ending. My son is only 4 months old, but I wanted to get into the routine of bedtime reading early, and he seems to listen and looks at the pictures. It's one that we'll keep and continue to read in the coming years as he gets older. The illustrations are lovely and it's a nice story for 'doing voices' when reading aloud to children - the baby owls Sarah, Percy and Bill all comment in turn on each page and it's nice to do a different voice for each of the baby owls. I also like the repetition of Bill's 'I want my Mummy' throughout the story, which becomes 'I love my Mummy' at the end when the Owl Mother returns to the baby owls. It makes the story memorable for children, and older children might enjoy joining in and reading Bill's line.A lovely bedtime story for young children.

Just brilliant!
Ok, so, thia book was bought due to nostalgia. I read this book to my now 14 year old son when he was 2, it was our favourite book to read at bed time for ages. I now have a 2 year old daughter and saw this book and immediately had to buy it. When it arrived, I showed my son and he instantly remembered it and said that he will be reading it to his little sister at bedtimes. Its a great book, isnt too long so little ones don't loose interest, and us parents don't mind reading it 15 times in a row ;) Lovely story to make you smile :)

Lovely story
This was one of my favourites as a child so I’m absolutely delighted to have a board book version for my little one. It’s beautifully illustrated and is a lovely story about separation anxiety. My little one struggles with me leaving, so it’s nice to reinforce that mummy will come back, just like Owl Babies!

Excellent for separation anxiety
I reckon this is brilliant for times when a child is having separation anxiety. My son has sometimes quoted it to me when I picked him up from nursery: "You came!"It's a very simple story as suits small children of say 1 to 2.5 yo. My dad thinks it's boring, but he would. So good I tend to give it as presents to new mums.Beautifully illustrated.

Heartwarming.
My Grand-daughter has been reading this with her class in school, and it is another book that has resonated with her. I always find that a good measure that it is a book she should own herself, and continue to read and enjoy, after she has moved on in school.
