Clear instruction with generous sharing of practical advice.
What a find! I have recently completed studio training in Florence and in water based gilding so it was just fabulous to find this text which reinforced all my learning and amplified the detail in my own study notes.I have tested some of the recipes and found them to be very accurate. This is a must-have in the artist's studio and contributes enormously to ensuring artisan expertise is recorded, is accurate and able to be incorporated and applied in personal technical skills.

Excellent book
This will give you an in depth description of the process. The techniques are very old fashioned, but very easy to understand.

Not the most detailed on the gilding process, you honestly can find more informative information online, but this book does contain some useful information on supplies and a basic overview of the process.

Useful information on gilding
As the title suggests, this is a very practical book on gilding. My interest stems from the writing of Byzantine icons with gilded haloes, using gold leaf for the background and shell gold for decorating a garment. Although my introduction to gilding was directly from an iconographer, the book reviews the subject so thoroughly your knowledge of the subject is deepened and expanded. It covers types of gold, the tools used and the methods of application for various uses as well as what the authors refer to as special techniques. It even discusses putting gold bands on harpsichords. The list of suppliers at the end is very useful as is the brief bibliography. Because of my experience I think I would advise learning this art under a tutor.

General Impression
Excellent practical book. Every Gilder, Apprentice or Journeyman, should have a well thumbed copy in his gilding kit.
