I realized quickly that the unit will not work with ...
I realized quickly that the unit will not work with the rear wheel. Because I plan to use my bike with an indoor trainer, this unit was not suitable for my use. So I sent it back without using it. Another thing missing (that I was expecting) was the cadence. I saw that it can handle cadence, but that requires an optional item with an additional cost.I am still going to try the Sigma line, but I will be trying a more expensive model (with the deceptively similar model name: BC 16.12 STS Cadence) in order to get cadence and rear wheel monitoring, a model that is wireless and requires more batteries.

Good successor to the BC1609
Back in 2011, I was in the market for a bike computer. I settled on the BC1609, as detailed in my (apparently useful) review on that page. Unfortunately some water got into it in 2014, and it stopped working. (It did come back to life after being put in the oven on a low temperature, mind, but I figured I shouldn't rely on it any more). As I was very happy with my BC1609, I ordered a 16.12, which is effectively the same bike computer but with a few minor tweaks and more rounded corners. It also had the added bonus of fitting on the old 1609 mount. As this is pretty much the same device as the old 1609, and my previous review applies just as well to the 16.12, following is a very slightly modified version of my 1609 review:Having recently got a bike to get to work and back, I started asking myself questions; just how fast am I cycling? How long does it take me to cycle to work? How far is it? What's the fastest I've gone? Before too long, I realized I needed a bike computer, and luckily it just so happened to be coming up to Christmas. As you probably know if you're reading this, finding a good inexpensive bike computer is a daunting task. There seem to be many conflicting reviews, and a lot to choose from. The main things I was looking for were A) ease of removal, to avoid it being stolen, B) the ability to mount it on the stem, as my handlebars are a bit full, C) a backlight, and D) wired communication, having read enough issues from people with wireless computers. This handily fulfills all four; the computer easily twists off, you can rotate the mounting bracket 90 degrees, it has a backlight, and it's wired.Installation presumably varies from bike to bike. I have a Merida Crossway 40, and it was a bit tough, but this was just physically fitting the bands around my bike and the magnet on my spoke. I did also manage to lose one of the screws when rotating the mount, but that's my own fault. Once this was sorted, it was all fine, and feels pretty secure - I'm not worried about it falling off at all. You do need to measure the length of your wheel though, so make sure you have a tape measure or something.Since fitting the computer (which I did 2 weeks ago, so if there are long-term issues I won't know about them - EDIT: was so happy I got a replacement after 3 years), I have found it more useful than expected. When cycling into work I have the display set such that it shows the speed and the current time, so I know if I'm going to be there on time or not. It's handy to be able to see whether shifting up a gear actually makes me go faster or not. It's nice to know that it's apparently a 6.66 mile round trip to work and back. It's satisfying to see how much I've done, both in time and mileage, in total. The one thing that would also be handy that's not present in this model is the cadence sensor, but this appears to add another £30 or so to the price.Controlling the computer's pretty simple; there are four buttons, set, reset, the top function button, and the bottom function button. The display, when not in settings mode, always shows the speed and one other reading. These readings are changed via the function buttons, with the bottom one showing more trip-specific readings (e.g. trip time, distance, etc), and the top one showing more general readings (total distance, current time, current temperature, and so on). The backlight's enabled by pressing set and reset at the same time, and then the first press of either function button will turn it on. That's all you have to worry about whilst cycling. There are just a couple of niggles I have with this, but neither is major enough to downgrade it to 4 stars. Firstly, if you select MPH as the unit of speed, it also assumes you want temperatures in Fahrenheit. Fahrenheit means nothing to me, so the temperature function is useless until we switch to metric road measurement. Secondly, there doesn't seem to be a way to reset trip distance and time at the same time without also resetting max speed, average speed, and so on; you have to reset both individually. Not a major problem, and I imagine different people would want to reset different combinations of things.

Five Stars
Great price, and good product. It must be configured for whatever wheel size your bike has.
