The "Gaiwan," comprised of a tea bowl, a saucer and a cover, has been the preferred vessel to brew and serve tea in China since the Ming Dynasty. The gaiwan can be used to brew tea prior to transfer to smaller gungfu-style containers for consumption or the tea may be sipped directly from the bowl.
