So you've studied French, but feel like you can't maintain it....what to do? The first Harry Potter book in English is about a 4th-5th grade reading level, easy for most adult readers. If you've read and liked it in English, why not try it in French? The translation changes names that have meaning in English to those that have meaning in French, but otherwise it's a pretty easy read. Comprehensible input is the ideal way to maintain your language skills. This book makes that fun in French. For me, it's on to books two and three! Pourquoi pas?

I've read all the Harry Potter books and it was a lot of fun to see how the french translation works with this series. The translator is Jean-François Ménard, and his handling of the books is pure alchemy (for example, his french names for the various houses, characters and his rendering of some of the magic spell instructions).

Purchased this Livre Audio (French language audio book) as a gift for a Harry Potter fan taking HS French 3. The recordings are high quality with a native French speaker, so it makes following the familiar story easy. Because the story is familiar, you can perfect your ear and accent. If the mp3's are loaded onto an ipod, you can adjust the speed of the speech to make it easier to understand.

I'm an intermediate French student and so far this book has helped me learn considerably, however it is not for beginners or even newly-intermediate French learners. The vocabulary will be foreign to you, since most French classes won't teach you that "Une baguette magique" means a wand. If you purchase it, make sure you have a copy of the English version (or whichever version is your native language) to read alongside. It will further your understanding. I definitely enjoy being able to read and understand this book in French, though.

If you love Harry Potter, and if you want to expand your French vocabulary and current expressions, then I highly recommend reading it in French. Great translation!

The Harry Potter series has enchanted me for years. I decided to read the Harry Potter books in French to revitalize my somewhat rusty French. I was delighted to see that the translator did an excellent job of translating the story, and I was especially happy that he kept JK Rowling's spirit of imaginative fun in his translation of names of places, people and things in the magical world. Kudos to Jean-Francois Menard for a superb job!

I'm reading the HP series in French as part of my self-directed language learning project. It's great! My tutor is always a wee bit surprised when I throw out a few new words in our sessions.

Great book

Simplesmente maravilhoso, bem escrito, emocionante, como todos os 7 livros sobre o Harry Potter. Do primeiro ao último volume, uma história coerente, por vezes engraçada, sempre cativante, sobre um mundo paralelo ao nosso em que bruxos e bruxas vivem as alegrias e os problemas decorrentes da natureza humana, buscando sempre o bem vencer o mal.
