Passions of a Man: Complete at CD, Import, Box set

Why include a whole CD comprising of an audio interview? I don't get it. If you must, just include it as a MP3 audio file as an extra on one of the other audio CDs.OK, apart from that issue, & the fact that the original albums are not represented in their original order (much like Atlantic did for their Ornette Coleman release, & others), I can wholeheartedly recommend this box set release. Excellent music, & the included booklet is well done.

C'est rauque, c'est puissant, c'est avant-gardiste et... c'est beau, bref, c'est Charlie Mingus.Ce coffret contient l'intégrale des six albums enregistrés par le contrebassiste prodige chez Atlantic, plus des prises alternatives en bonus.Il faut savoir que ce coffret, sorti en 1997, est épuisé chez l'éditeur (Warner, dans une très belle remasterisation) et qu'il se vend à plus de €100 d'occasion sans garantie d'authenticité. Il s'agit véritablement d'un classique de l'art du 20ème siècle que tout mélomane se doit d'écouter. L'inclusion de l'album "Jazz at Antibes" peut sembler saugrenue dans le sens où il a été enregistré et publié par Barclay, mais il montre l'étendue de la richesse stylistique de Mingus qui s'est lancé ouvertement dans l'aventure du jazz moderne avec Eric Dolphy, tout en maintenant ses racines dans des pièces inspirées du blues.C'est donc un véritable panorama de la culture afro-américaine des années 60-70 que nous offre ce coffret via la démonstration de l’éclectisme et de l'excellence de l'homme en colère Charles Mingus, renforcé par la présentation chronologique des œuvres.Notez que le dernier CD contient un entretien d'1h15 avec Charlie Mingus, qui ne sera apprécié que par les auditeurs anglophones, de même que le contenu du livret de 112 pages qui, en plus d'une présentation du musicien et d'une brève histoire du label Atlantic Records, contient la reproduction des pochettes originales et de leurs textes.A se procurer et à écouter d'urgence et sans limites donc, c'est un grand et beau voyage au cœur de la profondeur humaine de l'homme révolté américain dont le chant demeure intemporel.

Worth buying for Live at Antibes alone.

... als ihn wird es schwerlich zu finden geben. Einen besseren Komplett- (Einstieg) in diese Schaffensperiode ebensowenig . Auch die remasterte Soundqualität macht es zu einer Kaufempfehlung, auch wenn man die einzelnen Aufnahmen vielleicht bereits besitzt(wie ich)

アトランティック時代の全音源ボックスの、John Coltrane『Heavyweight Champion』とOrnette Coleman『Beauty Is A Rare Thing』がお安く再発されて購入。で、この２作品が再発されているのならばMingusのあれも出ているのでは…と思い検索したら案の定出ておりました。もはや音楽について語る必要は無いと思います。今回初めてこのボックスを購入して最も興味深かったのが６枚目のディスク。かなり異色ですが、80分近くのインタビューがまるまる収められています。ほとんど一方的にしゃべり倒し、よく歌い、「ガッハッハ」と豪放に笑うミンガス。私はネイティブではないので言ってる事は半分くらいしか理解できないのですが、分からなくてもこの人の人柄は手に取るように伝わってきます。バンドリーダーとして多くのミュージシャンに慕われた理由が良く分かります。(ただし人種差別の体験を語るときは語気がとたんに強くなる。)ファンはこのボックスを買うと当然ダブるとは思いますが、それでもおすすめです。　　　Coltrane,Coleman,Mingusの一連のボックスは現在全て4000円前後。この３巨人のアトランティック黄金期の全音源が12000円ちょっとで入手できるのだからありがたい。

As a long-time listener (approx. 40 years) to all sorts of good music, I recently introduced myself to Mr. Charles Mingus after an N.P.R. program about his life & work. I scooped up several CD's, and sets of CD's, from my library system and began to get acquainted with C.M.'s output. Yes, it is varied and there's a lot of it. A larger and more expensive set of RCA (and other) albums is worthwhile for the Ming-o-phile no doubt, but even his last wife, Sue, expressed doubts about some of what is offered therein. This set has many of the 'greatest hits' included on five discs of excellent sound quality, as well as a sixth disc which is devoted to an extended colloquy between Atlantic's Ahmet Ertegun and Mingus. The documentation accompanying the six CD's is about a hundred pages and is the best I've ever seen in a set of this type... and at this price. Anyone who likes jazz at all, and who wants a good sample of the Mingus 'vibe' (not to mention his fabulous sidemen) should own this set.

Mingus is arguably the greatest jazz composer next to Sir Duke, that's how I feel anyhow. His whoops and yells still bring chills to my spine!
