Still Dead Space, just more diverse
I have to say I've been a fan of Dead Space since news and images started coming out for the first game. I pre-ordered both Dead Space 1 and 2. I think you'll enjoy the game a lot more if you played the first 2, and maybe seen the animated movies. I love the universe and mythos that's been created, but the game shines on it's own, as an absolutely fun game to play. This game, to me anyway, seemed much like the first 2. The biggest difference seems to be the scope. Instead of one single ship being infected it has larger implications. This is still the same cramped corridors Dead Space, jump scaring, enemies coming out of the vents and ceiling Dead Space. Being on the snow planet doesn't even come into play until a little before the games half-way mark.Gameplay is solid after 2 previous entries, it would be criminal if playing felt anything less than highly polished. If you ever played a Dead Space game before, it'll be easy to jump into. I think new players might have to get use to it a little, but it's not hard to learn. There are a lot of set piece moments, that have you pulling off impossible escapes, that leave you feeling like a bad @$$. The zero-g sequences are also a lot more expansive, and not so linear so they have some exploration quality to them. The inclusion of mines that home in on you as soon as you get in proximity, further adds to the toughness and you'll get confused in which way to go as you're trying to avoid mines and enemies. The story is not only a great continuation, but also brings to light some of the mysteries of the markers that were never revealed in previous games. I play Dead Space games to immerse myself in the experience. I turn off all the lights, and crank up my stereo. Graphics are very well done, and are about on par with DS2, but there seems to be more emphasis on the human element this time around. The Faces are very well rendered and there's a good amount of emotion visible on the characters faces. Particle effects, lighting, and smoke effects are all well done. This is a horror game so it has a lot of dark areas which suits the mood perfectly. Sound is nice and crisp, and as always eerie and creepy. It has a great musical soundtrack that would even lend itself well to a high budget sci-fi film. Voice acting is top-notch as well. Sound effects are very visceral. When you shoot a gun, stomp an enemy, or melee them you can almost feel it. The weapon crafting system is awesome. Find spare parts and kits. Take them to a bench, and add or change new parts to subtly or drastically change how your gun acts. This creates a lot more variety, and is more adaptable to the kind of way you decide to play. It also dynamically changes enemy encounters, as some guns will be a lot more useful with certain enemies. The suit kiosk lets you change your suits, obviously, as well upgrade your rig (stasis, kinesis, and armor) while the bench is more delegated to weapon crafting and upgrading (new weapons and weapon parts) and item creation such as med packs. Occasionally you will find blueprints, that will allow you to build a weapon from scratch as long as you have enough of the required resources. Scavenger bots are nice too. You can let them loose in the environment and when you make it to the next bench they'll have crafting items for you to collect or use. "Resources" or the parts you use to upgrade and buy stuff appear to have replaced the currency system. Choosing to use your resources to upgrade your rig, or your weapons with your limited supply is still much like the node system in DS1 and 2. I'd seriously recommend upgrading the stasis to slow enemies, as it will be a life saver when you're attacked by a group of necromorphs.I'm not sure but I think this game is a little more difficult than the first 2. It seemed to me the AI has been improved to make encounters tougher. Enemies seem to give you a second or two where they move slowly before charging at you, or attacking you with a projectile. Frequently you're trapped between an enemy or enemies and environmental dangers like gravity tiles ready to splatter you on the ceiling, or electrical barriers. There's a diversity of enemies from the first 2 games, unlike many reviews suggest. I've fought pukers, those large tentacles that are like sub bosses guarding an objective, the pregnant ones that burst open and even had to run from a pair of those invincible enemies that continue to regenerate no matter how much damage they take. Sometimes enemies sneak up and flank you, as you're taking aim on the one directly in front of you. I think I've died in this game a lot more than I did in the others. One of the things I really didn't like about this game is the online pass, I guess it's to play online co-op. I'm not a fan of any kind of DRM, but the way everything is going nowadays, at least you're not required to have an online connection to play. I'll add to this as new thoughts emerge or if I need to edit anything, but for now I'm gonna get back to playing. I think this is a must have for Dead Space fans, sci-fi, or horror fans. If you like action or shooter games I'd highly encourage you to pick it up. THIS GAME ROCKS!!

Maintains most of the Dead Space feel
In a year where trilogies have been the norm rather than the exception, Dead Space 3 wasn’t necessarily greeted with open arms. Adding co-op to the campaign and even including human enemies, many fans were immediately turned off. Before you play the game, you may want to consider how these changes have affected the franchise.GraphicsEveryone knows I’m not that obsessive when it comes to graphics. I enjoy a good looking game, but as long as it’s not glitchy or super ugly, gameplay is often the redeeming factor for me. So with Dead Space 3, I can’t really say if it’s an improvement over Dead Space 2. There are some nice effects here and there and a brighter color palette in places, but it basically looks like just its predecessors, which isn’t a bad thing. I never had many problems with graphical bugs, although a few times when aiming on an elevator, Isaac would reset his position. (If you’ve played the other titles in the series, you know elevators aren’t always safe.) Aside from some clipping when enemies get too close, the game looks good, but doesn’t really make a big leap forward for the series.SoundIt’s not very easy to claim a game’s sound quality goes above and beyond other titles. Musical scores, sound effects, and mixing are often either good or terrible, but there are very few titles that really showcase exceptional audio mastering. Dead Space 3 is one of those titles. If you play this game with a good set of headphones or with a surround sound system (like myself), the audio really brings this game to life. Vents explode open, ceiling panels crash, and creatures creepily groan and wail all around you throughout the entire adventure. The voice acting is well done here (Isaac sounds a bit like Tom Cruise at the beginning to me, am I crazy?), with the exception of Danik, who sounds a bit forced at times. The building violins and drums also add to the intensity and are crucial to the experience. Flawless.GameplayIf you’re a fan of the series, you’ve come expect a smooth third-person shooter with tight controls. Dead Space 3 won’t disappoint, as everything from the first two games has carried over. A few new moves have been added (including crouch and roll mechanics), but although some people are outraged over their inclusion, they are purely optional elements. Also new is the weapon crafting system, which I have a love/hate relationship with. In theory, it’s a good idea to be able to customize and build weapons in a way that best suits your play style, however, I found at times that trying to put new combinations together was a bit cumbersome. Due to this change, they had to adopt universal ammo, since multiple types would be too confusing. I partially enjoyed the aspect of ammo conservation and selection in the past, but others may disagree. Overall, the gameplay remains very smooth, and my only frustration came from mountain climbing. The latter part of the game has a few sections that really frustrated me, and made me wonder why the developers insisted on including such an unnecessary mechanic.Campaign/StoryMyth: There are human enemies throughout the entire campaign. In fact, they are in the first 5% of the game and maybe the final 10% of the game. Many fans were fearful that Dead Space was going the Call Of Duty route, trying to focus on gunplay and non-stop action. Don’t get it twisted, this is definitely a Dead Space game. There aren’t as many empty hallways, and the tension doesn’t build quite like the previous games, but this game is intense. Similar to DS1, I didn’t find myself really wanting to play this game for large chunks of time. There are a good amount of jump scares here, and the way enemies enter a room forces you to move at times, whereas with the previous games you could usually find a corner and plant yourself there. The story itself is interesting, as Isaac teams up with Ellie and her new boyfriend to find the source of the Markers. Again, people complain about the “love triangle,” but it’s so brief I didn’t mind it. Isaac spends a good portion of the game navigating ships, and the latter part on the snowy planet of Tau Volantis, which is a nice change of environment. Not too many new enemies in this entry, but all of them move extremely fast, and to me, I felt this game was the toughest of the three, for that reason alone. I’m halfway through my second playthrough and immediately started it after I finished my first. The campaign is very solid.Lasting AppealCompared to the prior games, this game has a ton of unlockables. Collectibles are kept track of this time around, and completionists will want to find everything. Some people complain there are too many collectibles…then don’t collect them, seems like a pretty simple solution to me. For the first time there is a mission select screen, which I think is very handy, and allows you to easily play your favorite section on-demand, or return to an optional mission you skipped the first time around. Speaking of which, the optional missions were much more difficult and intense than the regular missions, in my most humble opinion. Classic mode, pure survival, and hardcore modes are unlockable, not to mention it can all be done with a co-op partner. I’ve yet to play the game co-op, but this one really seems like it would be a fun experience with a buddy. Awesome replay value.OverallIf you were a fan of Dead Space 1 and 2 and don’t mind a little bit more action, you’ll certainly love this game. It really does feel like it belongs in the series, and makes an attempt to continue the story in a way that doesn’t feel like a stretch. If you haven’t yet played the other entries, I would highly recommend playing them first, as this game is an appropriate evolution for the series. The dark and intense corridors are still here, but the new elements and environments that add variety to the game are too. Some members of the gaming community really have a hard time accepting changes to their favorite series, but not all changes are bad.
