A 19th century 20 francs gold coin from the 2nd French Republic, dated between 1871-1898. These small, high-purity gold coins would have represented about a weeks' work for the average Parisian. These coins are popularly called "Angels" because of the angelic figure featured on the coin's reverse. The figure (as envisioned by the coin's sculptor, Augustin Dupré) is actually not a traditional Christian angel, but rather a depiction of the ancient Roman personification of Genius. The design was first used in 1791, following the French revolution. The winged Genius is depicted writing the constitution of post-revolutionary France. Each coin will be in extra fine or better condition, with minimal wear and possibly some remaining mint luster - please see the product images for examples. The coins will be dated between 1871-1898, and struck at the Paris mint ("A" mintmark). These coins are approximately nickel-sized, measuring 21mm in diameter and 6.4g in weight, and have a gold purity of .900 fine.
