The FFL
Martin Windrow and the FFL how can you go wrong. I'll bet any one who has painted a FFL army used his books as a guide to painting FFL figures. I did. What more can I say.

Osprey always delivers
The things I don't like about this small, 40 page, volume are the things I always complain about with Osprey. The book is too short! I want more! It has a lot about uniforms of the famed Legion over a hundred years, excellent for a modeler, but I am not a modeler so I don't care. There, I am done. Of course, when I got the book I knew it would be short and filled with precise, accurate drawings of uniforms and equipment. Michale Roffe has given us a series of immaculate drawings-thanks. And Osprey books are meant for an introduction to a particular subject, not the full tilt, only book you will even need. Within those restraints, this is quite good. Martin Windrow is a talented author, able to enliven history without delving into bombast. The history, properly presented as it is here, is compelling enough for a writer of thrillers. Even in these few pages, we get a notion for why the Legion has gathered such fame as an elite fighting unit. The story of the Legion is replete with heroic last stands, fighting to the death and doomed bayonet charges. The story is also replete with a French government careless with the lives of the men pledged to die for La Belle France. Some shocking and new to me tales of government treachery are told. Modelers will love the drawings. History buffs will be able to take the book as a starting point for further study if they desire. Even tho my copy was written nearly 50 years ago, I found it useful and worthwhile to read.

Not quite the quality I expected
The print and reproduction was poor. Not the usual Osprey quality

Windrow and Chappell up to their usual standard.
I can't really say 'I love it', but I can't see any reason to dock the book a star either. I've been reading Windrow since The Last Valley and am happy to read anything he does thereafter. Chappell's illustrations for this series are also a joy.

Awful
Awful. Just like a pamphlet, hardly any history just mainly pictures. Complete waste of money

excellent
pas de problème - dommage qu'il n'y ai pas de traduction de cette série après tant d'années de parution en France
