Understanding How You Observe Color and Value and Applying it to Your Paintings
Great book for beginning and experienced oil painters. Distills down how to observe color and values and translate your observations to your paintings in clear step by step process. There are many great online tutorials but in the end, this simplifies everything, and quite elegantly. The small tips/suggestions MacPherson includes on his pages are also very helpful. Includes everything from color, paints, substrates, to finished paintings.To the Seller, YMCA at Virginia Tech, I want to say thank you! The book is in perfect condition and arrived two days early. I'm also very happy to know that my purchase will help their many valuable community programs. For future Amazon purchases, I will look to their store first.

Very pleased with this book.
I am really pleased with this book. It has step by step explanations on how to bring more dramatic light into your paintings. I love the examples and the explanations. The pictures throughout were also beautiful. One of the best painting books I have. I ended up recommending to my paint groups online too.

Excellent choice for plein air oil painters
I have a couple of Kevin MacPherson's books on landscape painting. I thoroughly enjoy them and have always taken away valuable information from his writings. The only thing I still struggle with is the limited palette that he recommends in both of those books. I mean...what am I supposed to do with all of my many tubes of gorgeous oil paint? But, I'm working on it and have begun to feel more comfortable with using just a handful (Kevin's recommended handful plus a couple additions of my own) to do my color mixing.There is so much in this book that is useful to both the novice and advanced artist. All manner of practical advice, instruction, and demonstrations are included having to do with landscape painting in the great outdoors. And, really...if you're painting the outdoors, isn't it better to actually BE there rather than painting from a photo? (Although he has a book that addresses that, too, which is wonderful.)One of my favorite pieces of advice that I found in this book is Kevin's challenge to do 100 starts as well as a second challenge of painting a small plein air in one hour every day for 3 months. It's excellent advice. It forced me to stop concentrating on getting every painting "just right." It instilled a feeling of freedom that really loosened me up as an artist.Good stuff.

I love this book! The writer knows what he is talking about; he paints extremely well himself and there are so many photos that you can't miss the idea behind his wordsCopying others' works is a very good way to learn techniques and his photos enable fast learning.Like I said - I love this book! ❤️
