Transform your life!
Transform your life! This book is amazing, I do not recommend it for beginner yogi's but for anyone that has the desire to deepen their yoga practice - get this book! The pranayama sections are very detailed and the sections on meditation/krias are great. This book is for someone who wants to make yoga a part of their life, not just a fly by night hobby. Gary is a wonderful teacher and writer.

Thank you, Gary!
That's one of the most complete and useful books on yoga, shedding light on the deepest traditional teachings of this ancient discipline. An indispensable integration to Gary Kraftsow's former book "Yoga for Wellnewss" and a wonderful inspiration for a yoga practice that goes beyond the mere physical sphere. This book is proof that the wisdom of great Krishnamacharya keeps blooming in his best disciples.

This is an excellent, concise book packed with so much information that it will be useful for years. It breaks down classical ancient teachings and makes them accessible. Chapters are dedicated to different layers of our being, and there are practices to help students work with the many layers of their being. I use it to help my Yoga students support their home practices.

An Excellent Guide to the True Meaning of Yoga
After years of practising yoga I found myself drawn to investigating the Viniyoga approach, and to this book. As a voractious reader, I thought that I had pretty much 'seen it all' as far as yoga was concerned - after all, how different can all these books be when they have the same source? How wrong I was!Gary Kraftsow's book brings a very different approach to yoga from that which I have previously experienced. It starts with a fresh perspective on yoga as a whole, then takes you through all the different aspects of yoga in such a way as to provide you with the knowledge to create a truly personal practice. With this personal practice, that is a practice composed of elements that are effective for YOU, you can change all those habits that you have accumulated through your life and truly transform into that which is your greatest potential. I have no doubt in the power of this form of practice, which is simple and subtle enough to be possible in almost everyone's life.A life-changing book, even for those who are already strolling down the path of yoga. It has inspired me to read further, from Gary's other books and from the books of his teachers T Krishnamacharya, TKV Desikachar, and Kausthub Desikachar. More than that, I have arranged to practice with the Desikachar's in Chennai when I visit India next year. What more can I say? Buy this book, read it, absorb it, and let a practice that is truly YOURS flow from it.

Best book on the subject of Yoga
I picked this up and started reading from the front cover and didn't want to put it down. Understanding the difference between Yoga and Yoga practice is at the forefront. If ever a book was written that was going to tell you about Yoga, this is the book to read. I've had other books, in fact, a small library, but this book is concise to the point of Yoga. It doesn't wander off and discuss the varying approaches to Yoga either through rituals, worshipping gods etc. The simple scientific process associated with learning how to know your own mind and helping to understand the associated practices to help effect the parts of the body that we can't see, but we can feel, when the practice is an appropriate one. I liked it so much, I bought a few as presents.

This book is aimed at those who want to use yoga for more than just the physical asanas. Asanas are described and used throughout the book (with useful black and white photos) but the text focuses much more on the additional aspects of yoga and how to use these practices with the asanas. There are some lovely asana sequences included in the book but the asanas are not explained in great detail and there are very few adjustments mentioned for those who can't yet do the full pose. So the book is really aimed at those who already have a yoga practise that suits them and/or go to a regular class and would know how to make adjustments in the asanas described here to suit their body. I would not recommend this book to someone beginning their yoga journey because of the knowledge assumed about the asanas and appropriate modifications. For anyone wanting to understand the other limbs of yoga other than the purely physical asanas it is a really useful book. The author runs the Viniyoga Institute in America - Viniyoga being defined as "comprehensive and authentic transmission of the teachings of yoga including asana, pranayama, bandha, sound, chanting, meditation, personal ritual and study of texts". Knowing this helps as all these aspects are reflected in this book. It covers the koshas or sheaths of which we are made and so includes all aspects of mind, personality and body. It also covers the main chakras, breathing, chanting, rituals and meditation. The author has taught yoga since 1976 and trained with some of the best teachers in India. It is also a useful resource for yoga teachers.
