An insightful book about Tove and her world
First off, this is written by an art historian and has a focus on the style and art history. I found that interesting, but the biographer has told an even broader story of someone who lived a very long and rich life and had a lot to say, finding her voice through painting and writing. I read the Moomin books of the 1940's to my kids as well as "Tales from Moominvalley" which is included in the Junior Great Books syllabus. Reading "Work and Love" made me want to get her stories for adults from the 60's through 80's, which I have not yet read. Such a remarkable person--having lived through a turbulent childhood and four wars by the time she was 30 and leaving such a gift of art and literature to all. The color quality of the illustrations and design of the book are first rate. It was published in English with financial assistance of the Finnish Literature Exchange. Highly recommended.

Engaging Biography
After watching the movie, Tove, I looked for a book that would provide both a biography and an overview of Tove's work. This book exceeded my expectations. Well written, broad coverage of her work and relationships, and a good introduction to her writing, which left a lot more to read and explore. Pictures are a great addition, making the book as much an art history book.

Beautifully written bio
One of the best bios I have read lately. Even if you have never heard of Tove Jansson, you might well enjoy it. She was an amazing, multi-talented artist and an interesting and pioneering person. Karjalainen does a splendid job of bring Tove’s story to life.

I highly recommend this book
I have been enthralled with the Moomins since I was a little girl. The woman behind their creation has now become illuminated and revealed to me in this splendid book! I have not yet finished it, but I am enjoying learning about her childhood, life as an artist and writer, and her successes and tragedies. I highly recommend this book, especially if you have a fondness for the Moomins. I am enjoying reading the book immensely - the writing, paintings, illustrations, and photographs are all wonderful!

This will be a birthday gift for my friend. The hardback presentation of the book is beautiful with the illustrations & the photographs included are very interesting& revealing. I have no doubt having read the reviews of this book that my friend will enjoy it as she is not only a big fan of Jove Jansson but the Moonins characters too.

Thoroughly intriguing expose of a true artist
Excellent, thorough and insightful treatise on the two motivations of this much loved illustrator. As suggested by the Title, this book offers a thorough analysis of Tove Jansson's life and body of work. Much more than an illustrator, Jansson is exposed as an incredibly talented artist and teller of tales alike.
