No good. I even bought a used instrument cluster and ...
This, is THE STRAP if you are replacing the engine-to-frame ground. Here's my story: THIS WILL APPLY TO ANY VEHICLE! (my vehicle is a 2003 Chevy 1500 AWD Van) For two years, I had been experiencing intermittent dummy lights and gauge failures as well as a perpetual ABS dummy light and other weird electrical issues. I read that the ignition tumbler was at fault, so I replaced. No good. I even bought a used instrument cluster and installed...Same problems!!! I also read about bad grounds, so I cleaned and reinstalled all the ground I could physically see. Still, no good. I just recently needed to replace my water pump. I decided to remove the bottom fan shroud to provide more clearance. And there it was! The engine to frame thick braided ground wire was green, disintegrated and split. The only way to check this is underneath and you need to know what you are looking for. The braided ground line is connected to the battery ground wire and bolted at the engine just behind the bracket holding the air conditioner compressor. I picked up this ground strap a few days ago. I installed it at the same place on the frame (under the fan shroud) but because I had full access, I wire-wheeled the frame and bolt to ensure a good ground. I did not connect the engine side to the original location because I could not remove the bolt which was obstructed by the compressor bracket. There is no easy way to loosen the bracket without first removing the compressor. So, the location of the ground wire is not important as long as there is a good connection to the frame. So I installed it to a bolt holding the oil/transmission dipstick tubes which bolts to the front of the engine (just route the ground so it won't interfere with the serpentine belt). I finished the water pump and started the van. NO CLUSTER ISSUES!!! Unbelievable. I hope this helps someone because I wish I would have read this two years ago...ENJOY!!
