Learning ROS for Robotics Programming

This is probably the first book described about ROS. The main purpose of ROS is mobile robot's navigation. Rviz and Gazebo play an important role on navigation. The way to use them are described in Chapter4-8. If you are not satisfied with website of ROS, I recommend this book to you. The only fault is to explain how to use on an old distribution fuerte. After you read this book, you can convert an example code files on fuerte to those on new distribution. You can download the example code files.

At first glance, this book seems to provide a conceptual framework and many practical examples. Professionally edited, illustrated, and produced by "team O'Reilly". I will refresh review as I work hands-on through the book.

Text is good but lots of code typos.Make sure you refer to:https://www.packtpub.com/books/content/support/13317Before pulling your hair out trying to figure out why the examples don't work.

Great book for ROS, one of many more to come when we see how ROS is advancing.

It describes an old ros version

It's far too out of date and doesn't provide anything all that valuable outside the online tutorials.

Contains nothing that isn't in the free online tutorials, uses older distro (fuerte) not most current (hydro) so no catkin.

This is what I need, for learning about the ROS.

日本人のレビューが皆無なのは、洋書（英語）だからでしょうか…。さて本書は、ROSのガイドブックです。2015/05月現在では、出版年がいささか古くなってきたため、コマンドが減った/増えたなど最新版との内容に一部相違があります。それでも ROS:Wikiに書かれている内容よりは詳しく、またROS関連の日本語Blogよりは正確なことが多いので、仕事でROSを使う必要のある方は、いちおう手元にあっても良いかもしれません。本書の対象読者は、初めて ROSを触る人のようです。大雑把に下記の内容です。1) Ubuntuへのインストール方法2) ROSのアーキテクチャ3) 周辺ツール（シミュレータ）やROS対応デバイスの使い方4) ROS上でのOpenCVの使い方5) ROSを使ったロボット制御（SLAM）ロボットの制御理論的な内容は一切なく、ROSを使った開発方法とその簡単な例が書かれているのみです。本書を完全に読み切ったわけではないのですが、実デバイスであるモータとの接続・制御部分の内容がほとんどない（ように見える・・・）ので、これを読んだだけで実際にロボットが制御できるかというと、やや疑問に感じるところです。周囲にROSに詳しい人がいないなら、あっても良いレベルの内容ですROSに詳しい人がいて教えて貰えるのなら、本書は買わなくても良いでしょう。
