Works great in more ways than one
Have 6 of these, and they work great as rod holders and as mounting hardware for a pair of DIY outriggers (pvc pipes with crab/lobster trap floats -Ā B003OAWS44 ).These rod holders are rugged. The clamps open up to just under 2 inches wide, and grip very tightly onto a plastic canoe. No problems trolling - i.e. clamp does not dislodge, horizontal/vertical rod adjusters do not get out of whack, no visible stress from the added drag when a fish takes the lure.No need to drill holes, fuss with mounting hardware, and setup/tear down takes only a few seconds. Hence, nothing "permanent" attached to my canoe, making it easy to transport and configure for the fishing situation - with or without rod holders, extra set (or not) when fishing with someone else, with or without the outriggers (depends on who is on board). Can mount these virtually anywhere, making it comfortable and safe to reach for the rods.

Perfect for canoe
Bought this for my Old Town canoe and it works perfectly. Super sturdy, and totally adjustable. Not a bad price either. I actually had one before but sold it with the canoe (not a smart move!). Liked it so much that I bought it again. Perfect for trolling in my canoe.

Excellent clamp style rod holder
Compared to other clamp style rod holders, this one is above the rest! As they say, you get what you pay for. While this is more expensive than the cheap knock offs, it's worth it. The trick with this unit is that you need to rotate the key/notch to the opposite side of where the rod will be pointing since there is no locking mechanism. If you don't do this then you'll risk dumping your rod and the holder in the water. You can craft some type of lock for it yourself, but it's unnecessary if you just align the rod opposite the key.

You won't be disapointed
Great rod holders. Use them on my small plastic boat. Even though the rails on the boat are a bit flimsy, the holders stick like glue. They are well made. I've had other mounts similar, but not near the quality and holding power.....now that I have used them a year later, I would like to further review. They are tight on the plastic rail, but won't stay on a good bite. I lost the rod and holder. I'm thinking about putting some type of grip tape between the plastic rail and the mount. If that doesn't work, I will have to get side mounts.

Eagle Claw Rod holder
This rod holder is heavy duty. The clamp is larger than expected but works nicely. As you can see in the pictures if you are using it for a canoe, mine is an older Mohawk, the clamp has a lot of room when tightened down and it does tighten down not allowing it to move around. I initially had the turn screw on the inside of the canoe but the holder twisted and didn't sit right so I moved the screw to the outside and it works much better. You will have a problem with a shorter rod handle say 7" like a light weight rod. The handle, like on my medium weight rod, is 9" and sits really well in the holder. I think the shorter handle will wiggle out when on the river or lake. The holder itself twists by lifting up on it slightly and turning it then pushing it back down to lock it in place. The rods are loose when sitting in the holder but should stay put for rivers and lakes. See pictures

Pops Off When Fishing .
I have a pontoon boat with sides made of square tubing. I clamped the Eagle Claw rod holder onto the square tubing and started river trolling. I bumped the holder with my elbow, and the holder popped off. So, I put it in a different location, and clamped it extra tight. I snagged a weed and the holder, plus may rod and reel popped off. I barely caught the whole mess as it was heading for the river. On my second time out with these holders, I found a place on the boat where the horizontal square tubing met vertical square tubing for a mounting surface that had more area. I clamped it tight enough that I was worried about damaging the holder. After trolling for a while, I snagged the bottom and again, the holder popped off and I caught it as it was leaving the boat. I pulled the holders off my boat not willing to take another chance at loosing my gear. When I got home, I went to my orders and saw that I cant return the holders I purchased because I am a few weeks out of the 30 day return window. So, one stars it is for this product.

Rugged, and reliable...definately worth the investment.
Rugged, and reliable the two I bought turned out to be better than I had hoped. No worries for craftsmanship these are built to last. Wife and I mount these on our 3.6m Avon boat everytime we go fishing and they allow us to troll in confidence. Our S.I.B. has no naturally mounted fishing pole holder and I wasn't interested in a permanent mount, as we fold up thr boat between uses and bulky add ons would have been more of a hastle than use, so being able to remove the mounts has been the driving reason for our purchase. I will tell you one of the best purchases I hae made yet for the boat, and as anyone can see the price is better is really good too. Should also mention we received ours litterally two days after purchase. Was a definate pleasent surprise. Would recomment to anyone reading this to buy with confidence.

Good but bulky
Pretty good quality plastic. Only thing is that it's a little and and heavy for a canoe, but get the job done.

very robust
Just used it fishing in Northern Manitoba. Worked perfectly. Nice to have the 2 stage lock so you don't accidentally pick up the rod holder from the base. I marked it on top and bottom so I know where the lock position is. Clamped on firmly. The only issue i had was the steep angle on the sides of my jon boat. I'll be looking at using a wooden mounting shim for future trips. Easy to use, holds the rod perfectly, built to last. what more could I ask for !

Could use improvements but works better than many others
Works not too bad. Works better than most of the ones I have previously tried. They all have a tendency to move around or shift or slide. The knob you use to tighten it down should be made of metal, not plastic, it WILL break at some point. Gave it 3 stars because it could use quite a bit of improvement but does the job better than a lot of others.
