How do they attach to the toilet seat?

They are screwed on the toilet seat. I would avoid using them on the thin plastic only seats. The thicker toilet seats give you room to screw the screws into the seat and not have them come through the top surface. I always pre-drill holes for the screws. Make sure your drill has a depth gauge or markings to make sure you don't drill to far. I hope that helps.

I have a regular plastic seat. To do it as per instructions is not possible because the screws will penetrate the seat. It is not easy to figure out the right screw length. what id did i put 2 layers of double sided tape https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Y1QWZ5V/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ( i think 3 layers would be better). Not only it gave me extra space for the screw, it helped a lot during the installation and adjustment.

Can you still lift the seat up after installation?

Don't understand how screws wouldn't go through to the top on thin plastic seat?

The screws do not go all the way through seat. They are intended to hold the bumpers in places. You may place a screw through the hole on the bumper and hold it beside your toilet seat to confirm if the screw would be too long for your seat.
