VERY academic
Utterly thorough treatment of Celtic mythology, extensive discussion of shift in language from Hindu-Sanskrit to Old Irish Celtic. Not the book for you if you are not into extensive language discussions. I LOVE it. VERY academic in nature.

A entertaining read.
I came across this book while reading takes of my native gods and cultures, for I am of Germanic descent. My wife however has a lot ofCeltic heritage and thought it would be good to know about the legends of other lands. I found the stories very entertaining, so much so that could barely put the book down. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys stories of the old ways as I do.

Fun Collection of Celtic Myths and Legends
This is an enjoyable fun compilation of old Celtic tales from each of the 6 Celtic nations. The author splits the book up into 6 sections one for each Celtic nation of fairly equal size. The authors introduction explains how he picked and put the collection togther and explains how he tried to make them as close to the oldest know original of each tale as possible. A good read for someone looking for a more entry level book on Celtic Myths.

I enjoyed it
First, this book is not suitable for deep mythological studies. Usually here you need access to source material in the original languages. At least Ellis points you to that material if you want to go that route. This book is a compilation of retellings of Celtic myths, legends, and folktales. The book is broken up by region and covers Ireland, Man, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany. I found his style enjoyable and easy to read but the structure of the Celtic style of storytelling is entirely left out. Those interested in this should look at his sources (which he discusses if not citing specifically). The book makes good and light bedtime reading (perhaps what I call a light read might be different than others, but this is pretty light). The stories are generally suitable for reading to kids. It is a nice collection, but has very little value from a scholarly perspective.

One of the Best Books of Celtic Lore I've Found
I'm constantly reading Celtic mythology and lore, and this book stands out as one of the best. There is lots of good background information included, along with a great collection of stories collected throughout Celtic lands. Though many of the names may sound awkward and unfamiliar to our modern ears, the writing flows like a living oral tradition. Whether you are looking for entertaining stories, a deeper understanding of the Celts and their culture, or keys to understanding ancient magical traditions, you will find what you are looking for here.

Exactly what I was expecting, for the most part...
Mythology has always been one of those subjects that I have found interesting. So I rather quickly motored through the standard Greek and Roman mythology, and thought "hmm where to go now?" And celtic mythology came to mind (Thanks to Diana Gabaldon's book Outlander...)Now I saw the page count on this book and I figured it would be a rather comprehensive overview of some traditional celtic mythology, and that is exactly what it was. In that respect the book was informative and entertaining, with just enough background history to allow just anyone old person (like me!) to get the general plot line of each myth and legend. However what i didn't expect upon purchasing this book is the density of this material. Many of the names of various characters were very similar or very long so it was often hard to keep track of who was who. Some kind of index with al the names would have been very helpful. Also, since I am not from Scotland nor have I ever been I was also very unfamiliar with the geography of where many of the legends took place. So all in all I was very entertained by this book, and I also learned a lot about celtic mythology (which was my goal) but it was a struggle. I would not recommend this book for anyone other than readers who have a natural curiosity about the subject because you will definitely need it to get through parts of this book.

How it is written.
It's really a good book. I have learnt a lot about celtic myths. It's very easy to understand, and it's very well written. I believe it's a good book to have, it doesn't matter if you want to learn all about celtic myths and legends for your studies or simple pleasure. I love it.
