Okay adapter, once I figured it out.
This adapter is much more finicky than the one that I misplaced, and purchased this to replace as it was a little less expensive. I recommend the Mr. Heater F276172 adapter over this one.Through trial and error, the process I found to make this adapter work for me was...Pre-chill small canister I wish to refill in freezer for several hours or overnight. It's good to make sure canister is fully empty before attempting to refill. Snugly attach adapter to the small canister that I am refilling (if there is any propane or pressure left, it will start to release through the adapter, so be sure to do this outside / away from sources of ignition, etc.). Connect adapter to larger propane tank used as refill source, while upright and with valve open. I can hear a tick sound when canister is tight enough to begin flow of propane from larger tank, but tighten up until snug. Once fully connected, I turn larger tank upside down, and leave for much longer than the couple minutes that the Mr. Heater adapter would refill. Maybe not the safest, but I've left tanks connected for over an hour, as the adapter I received takes a loooonnng time to refill the smaller canister. Then, I turn valve off on larger tank. Turn upside right, and disconnect smaller canister from adapter. There was a small amount of propane that would be released when disconnecting. Then I'd disconnect adapter from large tank. Repeat process for any remaining tanks I wished to fill.Hope this helps.

I would however recommend this for sure as I have refilled the bottles ...
I use this product often. We do a lot of camping and don't want to carry 20lb containers for the grill. In order to fill the 1 lb containers you must put them in the freezer to create temp gradient. It sometimes takes 2 or 3 tries to fill them. That's the main reason for the 3 stars. Second reason is the lower the volume in the 20 lb cannister, the more tries it takes to fill them. The threads on this are low quality. I thread the canisters in my Webber Q grill with no problem so I know it's the adapter. Makes it hard to connect them out of the freezer when very cold. I would however recommend this for sure as I have refilled the bottles many times saving me lots of money and trips to Walmart to buy more.

Want to save money on 15 oz. propane container purchases?
Have known about these adapter for years and finally bought this one. It does what it is advertised to do and that is all I needed. I use a torch to burn grass off my gravel pathways and near the road running in front of my home. The torch burns through a 15 oz. propane tank in a single using but doe the job very well. Instead of buying new containers pre-filled I can just charge my own, saves money, time and gas. The instructions say to weigh after filling and bleed off any over filled amount. I charge, assemble torch and use the tank on the day I need it and therefore bypass any danger of overfilling. Great product and I recommend to anyone needing to charge their own tanks as long as they realize the inherent handling of propane and follow safety procedures. This is not a toy and should not be treated as such.

A very good way to save on small propane bottles!
I like the convenience of refilling my empty 1 quart bottles for my camping equipment, although it does require some extra work to freeze the empties and warm up the big bottle before the transfer. And it does feel a little unsafe when you hear the smaller bottle fill up. You worry that it could explode! Also you must make certain the main can is turned off completely before attempting to unscrew the smaller bottle and make sure that you don't unscrew the adaptor at the same time or the gas just totally evacuates from the bottle you just filled. (A major concern for safety) a

This works.
They say that you can't top off your propane bottles but you can and here is how you do it. Attach the bottle to be filled to the propane cylinder and let it fill as much as it can (about 1/4 to 1/2) then take the propane cylinder that you just filled and placeit into a freezer for a few hours then reconnect it to the big bottle and it will top the small cylinder off. If it is winter time and yourbig tank is in a 20 Deg freezing cold environment this won't work. The trick comes from the bigger cylinder being warmer thanthe smaller cylinder that's being refilled so if it's the middle of winter you will need to place the big tank somewhere where it willget warm enough for the trick that I mentioned to work.

Ineffective
The product is fine, but getting propane into the small tanks is a problem. I tried freezing them, being sure the small tank is below the big one, leaving it in position for hours, but nothing seems to enable much propane to flow into the tank I am attempting to fill. It is a good idea but I am having difficulty getting good results

Works best when you put the small tank in the freezer ...
My boyfriend bought this adapter for his ice house heater. He says filling up a few small 1 pound cylinders is a lot easier then lugging around a big 20 pound tank. Works best when you put the small tank in the freezer for some time before filling and putting the 20 pound tank in front of a heat vent in the house so that it goes into the smaller one easier. Overall he is very happy with the product and it cost half the price of what we found in our local outdoors store

Defective
Defective. I froze four empty 1# Coleman bottles in the freezer overnight, and heated up my 5-gallon propane tank in the 95 degree sun for over an hour. I attached the refill adapter to the large propane tank, screwed a small tank directly out of the freezer onto the adaptor and turned the large tank upside down before opening the valve. One time I heard a small hissing sound, but this stopped after about 5 seconds. After 15-minutes I turned off the valve on the large tank and removed the small tank which was still empty. My other small tanks did not accept any propane from the large tank. I tried another 5-gallon brand new propane tank and the results were the same. There appears to be a check ball inside the adaptor, and I believe that this is defective and is sealing the hole that is supposed to be allowing the propane to flow through the adaptor. I will be purchasing another brand.
