Varietals of Honey
I just learned of Laurey Masterton when I received my e-blast from Cook's Warehouse, Atlanta,Ga., where I assist Chef's in cooking and demonstrating, that Laurey would be a visiting chef this October 2013. I could have signed up to assist but I've accumulated so many points towards free classes from my sweat labor, I decided to sign up to listen, taste and enjoy. I have been taking a series of Wine Classes held in this same store (Cook's) and have learned much on the varietals of wine paired with food. Laurey's book goes into the varietals of honey paired with foods which makes for intriguingly flavorful tastings. With each honey varietal, Laurey provides a description in the same manner as wine is described. The recipes vary from vegetables, to proteins to desserts. Laurey even provides a list of locations to purchase these honey varietal's.Being a photographer, I love the work of Johnny Autry, and with his wife, Charlotte, as the food stylist, they have, along with the collaboration of Laurey's recipes and details of beekeeping, presented a beautiful book. If this isn't enough, Laurey goes into great detail on beekeeping, the importance of bees, trivia on bees and most candidly, her failure two seasons in a row in beekeeping. I always appreciate when writer's are candid.

Honey Diversity
Laurey Masterton was talking at a local "Country Bookshop" in Southern Pines, NC. I couldn't be at the lecture, but purchased the book, anyway I found the book intriguing, ... so intriguing that I now own about 20 jars of different honey and am eagerly looking forward to visiting Laurey's in Asheville later this year. I find myself flipping through the photo's, the tasting references, the recipes, and bee/ bee keeping/honey-making insights frequently. In our part of NC, they sell Sourwood honey everywhere (including hard ware stores), but I never tried it. Inspired by the book, I tried it-I really liked it and now for an afternoon snack, it's Sourwood honey drizzled over a sliced grapefruit....superb. My culinary skills are poor at best, but I'm getting to bean expert on coffee laced with a different honey every day and the morning oatmeal has moved from something to dread to something to look forward. In short, buy the damn book, invest heavily in a honey collection and start looking forward to your Quaker Oats.NYL

IT' NOT GOOD
It's recipes call for honeys I have never heard of. Cheap $5, but costs that to return. Off to the goodwill.

Good addition to the Mead Maker's or Mead Pairer's Library
Although the word "mead" scarcely occurs in the whole text, this is a landmark book for mead appreciation and mead pairings. Cooking with honey involves combining honey with other ingredients; pairing mead with food involves pairing a honey-derived beverage with other ingredients. Creating a recipe that includes honey involves bringing a honey profile into a dish; pairing foods with meads involves marrying the flavors of the food with the flavors of a beverage made from honey. Lots of inspiring ideas here, even though you have to work for them. This book is a very worthwhile addition to the mead maker's library, and to the mead pairer's library. From kookoolanblog.com

Interesting but not great
This was purchased for me as a gift as I am keen to keep bees on our new country property but know nothing about them. It is an attractive, well-designed book. The story of Masterton's beginning with bees was great and I learned a lot from it. However, I found most of the recipes to be things I wouldn't make. We are in New Zealand so some ingredients were hard to come by and really there was nothing that stood out as special or worth the effort. I don't regret owning it but suspect it will spend most of its time on the shelf rather than being used.
