Read directions carefully
At first, I thought this shelf with stupid and pointless the way it was designed. However, after further review of the directions for installation, I realized I missed a vital step. When installing the support brackets, you MUST install them with the two “teeth” on either side of one of the shelf wires. If you put both teeth in between the shelf wires, the brackets do not hold whatsoever, rendering the shelf utterly useless. The picture on the instructions shows this, but it is not explicitly stated in the directions. Once I realigned the support brackets, the shelf was stable and without flaw. I did order extra support brackets as well so I could make sure it could hold good weight, so I have 3 brackets supporting the shelf instead of two. I also opted to use screws in the anchors instead of those nails/pins they sent which seemed somewhat useless.

Great product
Ordered this for my son’s closet as there wasn’t any shelving. Easy to install worked great and was easy to adjust to the size we needed.

Studs Require A Bit Of Work
This review is for the ClosetMaid 4-Foot x 12-Inch Shelf Kit model number 5631I got these to put over Olympia Tools 84-906 Hard Wood Workbench in my bedroom used for crafts and hobbies. I am old school and believe shelves that are hung on a sheet-rock walls should be attached to the studs. However ClosetMaid’s instructions for this self said that the rear hooks could not be further apart than 12 inches and they only provide five of those hooks. They also indicate the braces can not be placed further apart than 36 inches. Neither of those limitations work out very well for hanging their 48 inch shelf on studs that are spaced 16 inches on center --- not without more hooks and modifying the braces. The braces are designed to fit right under one of the smaller wires that run from back to front. The hooks are designed to fit between these wires. Thus “both” can not be be aligned with a stud. Their grids must be ½ inch offset. I also did not care for the way that the brace seemed to exert all the force on the single weld joint for the small wire that it hooks around. Thus I decided to modify the brace to directly support 1/4 inch diameter horizontal rod in front. I used a rotary cuter tool (Dremel clone) to cut the end tabs at a 45 degrees angle. Then I used a pair of pliers bent the circular portion back against the brace and squeeze it into a smaller radius. The disadvantage to this modification is that it shortens the brace a bit.I also ordered more ClosetMaid Wall Clips so that I could place then on 8 inch centers. I used the hooks as anchors for the braces as well. For the studs I did **NOT** cut off the plastic stub as directed. Instead I drilled a 1/8 pilot hole and then drilled a 1/4x 1 inch deep countersink for the plastic stub. I used 2 inch long #8 deck screws in those hooks. For the other hooks I used the ClosetMaid push pins.I use one of the 3/4 inch diameter tubes to hang rolls of tape and spools of wire. Haven’t found a use for the other one. So I just used the plastic shipping fittings to stick it under the back of the lower shelf.

Works great in a "roof line" closet!
This was perfect! Just what we needed for a long, but short closet. We REALLY wanted a true closet system but this closet is in a bedroom on the second story of our house. The closet has a very short back wall since it follows the roof line. I didn't realize how difficult it would be to find a closet rod/system/organizer for a closet with a short back wall. I generally like our other ClosetMaid items that we've purchased and have a full ClosetMaid system in our his & hers walk in closets in the master bedroom. So...I tend toward ClosetMaid anyway. This shelf works perfectly since we didn't have to rely on LONG brackets to hold up multiple shelves. My one complaint is actually just to ClosetMaid...getting a whole system with the long brackets is a pretty good deal for the amount of closet organizing compared to amount spent. However, I hate that I can't purchase the same items all together without long brackets as one system. I didn't like that I could only get this one piece for the cost of about 1/3 of a whole system.

Hot Garbage, YMMV on sturdiness over time.
Let's paint a picture:Opening scene - You are outside doing yard work. There's some bushes that have overtaken your sidewalk and it's time for them to go. The weather is nice, around 80 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. You have good music playing in the background and all vibes are good. You decide to do additional yard work because its so nice out. That neighbors dog comes out and you hate that dog with a passion, but you smile, wave and go about your business.Finished with your yard work, you clean up and you can't wait for that shower and that nice cold beverage waiting for you in your fridge, you walk in, turn the corner look at your closet and find everything on the ground. Everything, coat, that lunchbox you forgot about, that weird coat you bought when you were going through that phase.Guess who the person is in this story, you guessed it, me. I installed this three years ago almost to the day. Apparently the tip of the wall anchor broke, causing it to sag and boom, it finally gave up the ghost. So now here I am writing this review to warn you that while it looks nice and all, I would caution using the wall anchor system this came with. Now I have to figure out if I want to trust this system again and go to home Depot and pick some better walk anchors and screws, or if I want to say to hell with it and go to The Containter Store and get there Elpha system and have some piece of mind. While I figure this out, that cold glass of water just turned into a cold gin and tonic (shaken not stirred).FIN
