For Counterpunchers!
I am basically a 'junk-ball' pitcher. Persson's book is excellent. Its structures and bob & weave counterattacks are ideal for keeping your opponent off balance and neutralizing their pre-game prep, especially at the Club level. How many folks do you know who invest significant study in the Pirc/Modern? Not many. This is a massive treatment. I always steer my new students away from these 'give the heart-of-the-plate to the pitcher' strategies, but once you've invested the time in understanding them and developing a feel for them, you will find yourself more relaxed and comfortable than many of your more experienced opponents. My own fascination with this opening goes back to the days of Canadian GM Duncan Suttles (Subject of a three volume treatment Chess on the Edge) when it was derisively referred to as "the Rat." You may bleed points while you're learning to play on the first three ranks, but your return on investment will be the fun you having mud-wrestling like Duncan. Added bonus - what you learn can be applied from both sides of tyhe board.

Great book on modern defense
In-depth GM level analysis yet still an enjoyable read. Balanced evaluations. And it had the hippo!

This opening is "unsound!"
I have come to the conclusion that I must be a terrible chess player, although yesterday I played an expert/master strength player to a draw. The back cover of this book touts it as "a complete repertoire against 1.e4." And yet I can't play it without being beaten like a drum! 1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.Nc3 d6 4.f4 a6 5.Nf3 b5 6.Bd3 Nd7. There are several example games in the book that make it this far. My master level "friend" apparently knows me too well and knows I can play openings from memory, so he (as would most players of his ability) knows enough to take me into unfamiliar territory early. 7.O-O. This move is given in a note to game 10 on page 62. 7...c5 is the recommendation after which white plays 8.dxc5. But no, he doesn't. Instead he plays 8.e5. Jump to game 4 on page 28, into the notes again. 8...cxd4 9.Be4. Our author writes, "I spent a lot of time analyzing this variation for the book you are now holding in your hand, and I came to the conclusion that White can maintain a small advantage in all of the main variations after 9...cxd4. However, black has several playable lines, many of them leading to double-edged positions that may prove difficult for White to play in a practical game" (p.29). (Note, 9...cxd4 because the move order was slightly inverted from my game.}First of all, if you're going to play this opening against experienced opponents, count on white having at least a small advantage no matter how you play it! I can cope with that, and expected to have to cope with that. Second, the other side of double-edged positions is that they are also going to prove difficult for BLACK to play in a practical game, and doubly so if you go into them with a disadvantage to begin with!1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.Nc3 d6 4.f4 a6 5.Nf3 b5 6.Bd3 Nd7 7.O-O c5 8.e5 cxd4. This is by far the best move for black here according to Stockfish, but beware! You are now walking through a minefield. 9.Be4 Rb8. I am now on my own here, having been duly twisted around. We are following game 4, although I didn't know that. The next 2 1/2 pages are a dense analysis of this position. (Stockfish says 9...dxc3 is best here.) 10.Nxd4 and now we have another 1 1/2 pages of dense analysis. 10...dxe5 is the move in game 4, but I played 10...Bb7, which Stockfish gives as 2nd best but considerably worse than ...dxe5. 11.exd6 Qb6 12.Be3 Qxd6. Black is threading his way through the minefield acceptably according to Stockfish, but sooner or later a player of my caliber is going to make a mistake. 13.Bxb7 Rxb7 14.Re1 Ngf6 15.Qf3 Rb8? 16.Nc6 Rc8?? 17.Nxe7. Game over. This is a good book, certainly better than Lakdawala's Modern Defense Move by Move (which I've also reviewed), but I can't recommend it for players under expert or master strength who are better than I am at memorizing long, convoluted opening lines--you're NOT going to play this one on general principles. When moves that look perfectly reasonable to you are losing blunders, you are in over your head! Okay, I doubt this opening is really "unsound." Skilled players seem to get away with it all the time. Even Carlsen plays it. But I'm not Carlsen. For players of my strength (1700ish), this opening is not a sound choice.

Gioca come Tiger

The crucial book on the modern
Tiger Hillarp Persson is the guy in the A6 modern. If you play it, you need this book. It discusses all of white's options in response well.Having said that, there are a couple of things you need to know. This is specifically the A6 modern in response to E4, so it doesn't cover any of the modern vs D4 or C4 lines. It doesn't touch on the C5 sniper lines, or the C6 Suttles lines that it supercedes. Also, I've watched his video instructional with Simon Williams, and in that, there are a few moments where he says 'I don't play that anymore because of this'. Particularly, he says that he doesn't play the A6 lines in the Austrian attack anymore, because he overlooked the effect of A3. Having said that, the Pirc lines that he recommends instead are all in this book, so it's still complete against E4.

Wichtige Updates
