HYLOCEREUS HYBRIDS, aka Dragon Fruit, are fruit production plants, although a few are grown for their vivid, red and purple blooms. Dragon Fruit plants are nocturnal blooming (night blooming), and have XL blooms. Their back petal markings may differ slightly on the fruiting type, but most have white blooms and yellow throats. Growth is very similar from one variety to the next, but pulp and fruit size vary from small kiwi-sized fruit to large melon. Pulp color ranges from magenta, to white, and everything in between: pink, red, cream, etc. CARE: Most Dragon Fruit plants like shade at their feet, but need full sun at stem ends to bloom/fruit well. If you're coastal, they can handle full sun. They also like rich, well-draining soil. Unlike most Epiphyllums, Dragon Fruit plants can be planted in the ground once rooted. 'THOMSON' is made by the California Rare Fruit Growers, and is named after CRFG CO-Founder, Hylocereus/Dragon Fruit researcher, and Pitahya author Paul H. Thomson. 'THOMSON' produces a large fruit that can weigh up to 1.5 pounds. The pulp is sweet and flavorful, white in color, and it separates easily from its rind. Fruit can be eaten like a melon, made in to jams, served as a garnish, or whipped up in fresh juice smoothies! 'THOMSON' tastes best when chilled and eaten fresh. This variety will set fruit on its own, and blooms all summer. It needs little to no help in pollination for high production!
