Excellent Pocket Reference
This book surprised me with how much good information was put in such a small package. It presents extensive why ritalin and similar medications are over-prescribed and several important health issues (like food sensitivities, hypoglycemia) that may cause ADD-like symtoms. It also lists commonly prescribed meds, explains what they are, and potential side effects. Plus, the book is well researched, with specific reference notes documenting its statements.I think that any parent even considering placing a child on medications should take the time to read this very small book, FIRST. Any one in a position to advise parents about this issue, such as teachers or counselors, will find this to be a useful and quick reference to keep on hand.

A Classic Book on ADHD and Food Sensitivities
I read this book when it first came out in the mid 90s. I was working on a degree in biochemistry and becoming a clinical nutritionist after working in a psychiatric hospital unit for young children. Many of those kids had a diagnosis of ADHD, ADD or Autism but at the time Autism was not well known and they were wrongly diagnosed with things like "oppositional defiant disorder or non-compliant or worse. Dr Mary Ann tells the story of her own daughter and how she went back to school to help her child. Her daughter was falsely labeled with ADHD but she had food sensitivities. This book is a quick read, it's easy to understand and it was valuable to me at the very start of my education in biomedical treatment for autism disorders. I have been in this field of clinical nutrition, working with kids and adults on the autism spectrum (as well as people with very complicated chronic illnesses and autoimmune conditions) for over 20 years now. and I still refer to this book. This book is one of the first, Dr Block is a true pioneer, and If you are wondering about ADHD, and want another perspective besides just medicating kids, read this book! So much of what Dr Block wrote about back then is common knowledge now and used to help kids (and adults) with food sensitivities and ADHD or autism spectrum disorders today. We know so much more today about food reactions, allergies, sensitivities and how they affect our brains than we did back then. There was almost no discussion and no reading material on ADHD and brain issues as related to food back then. I mailed away to Texas to get the first printing of this book and a VHS tape that came with it. It was career changing for me and I have been able to help so many people with food reactions and ADHD/ADD/Austims etc..We have come so far but we always need mothers and doctors like this who will do whatever they need to to get our kids well.

C'est agréable de lire l'expérience d'un médecin /mère d'un enfant TDAH. Ca change des leçons culpabilisantes habituelles.Elle donne de vraies pistes à explorer.
