English Grammar for ESL Learners (Practice Makes Perfect) 2nd Edition

First off, this book is great for the price! Exercises are great and students can learn with help from someone adept in English. My only complaint, which is a small one, is that the directions and explanations are tough for non-native speakers to understand, and the italicized small-font directions are an eye sore. But balancing content and price, this is a great value!Second off, to smash the accusation of past perfect errors away.... There are none. For example:1. Mike has BORROWED/BORROWING my dictionary.Answer: Mike has BORROWED my dictionary. (Past perfect)This implies that Mike has borrowed my dictionary in the past BUT he isn't borrowing it any longer.Mike has borrowed my dictionary several times.Why is it different than past? Here's why:Mike borrowed my dictionary. (Past)This implies that he borrowed the dictionary AND he is still borrowing it. (Just because of the lack of context)But you can say: Mike borrowed my dictionary last week, but he returned it to me today.You can't say: Mike borrowed my book several times.You must use past perfect here and insert "has!"Buy this book and help nonnative speakers learn English, there are no grammatical problems here.--------------------EDIT------------------------After further education, the above example is not PAST PERFECT tense, it is actually PRESENT PERFECT tense.Regardless of the names, the grammar is still correct!Mike borrowed my dictionary. (Past, infers that he still has the dictionary due to the lack of time stamps.)Mike has borrowed my dictionary several times. (Present perfect)Before flying back to New York, Mike had borrowed my dictionary a few times. (Past perfect)The examples I made are weird, but the grammar is correct.Regardless of this technicality, this book can help foreign learners of English learn how English grammar works. Most people don't know what the parts of speech are called, but then again the names of the parts of speech aren't that important. What's most important is understanding what the grammar illustrates.

I have used this book for several years in my intermediate ESL class that I teach. The short introductions to each chapter followed by a generous amount of exercises (with the answers in the back of the book) make for a perfect learning tool. It's also a great resource to use as a tutorial for a beginning ESL student to supplement classes in conversational English. As children, we learn our maternal tongue by imitating sounds. But as adults, one of the quickest ways to learn a language is by constructing a grammar building and this book provides the necessary building blocks to create a strong foundation.

Couldn't look inside when trying to purchase (free preview) so I didn't know what too expect. It's a little too simple for my husband, so I'll keep it for my daughter as a tool when she starts school.

i can rely on these Practice Makes Perfect books to help my ESL students. I also use these books when I learn other languages such as Spanish. Trustworthy definitions and renditions; succinct; organized

I have used this book to teach English to ESL learners. It is OK and provides adequate information about grammar. At the same time I teach English by using the language in context in ways that are relevant to students and not by focusing on grammar. If you take that kind of approach it is a good dude.

As promised. A few minor gripes, but got the job done in my ESL tutoring. Recommend, especially as a comprehensive review tool.

I enjoyed seeing the straight-forward and well-organized approach this book took in teaching the basics of English. Something very practical and useful in the academic environment, formal or informal, in my opinion.

I bought this for a Chinese friend and she told me that it's very useful. She's happy with it.
