Product Description The undisputed "King of the New York City Blues" returns with an electrifying selection of hard-charging, guitar driven anthems. Popa's signature brand of progressive, lyrically incisive blues rocks like there's no tomorrow. STEALING THE DELVINS GUITAR features twelve new ' Popa songs and a cover of Jessie Mae Hemphill's legendary "In This World". .com Excitement doesn't come cheap, and Popa Chubby gets it every way he can in these 13 eclectic songs. The New York City singer/axe-mangler keeps things rolling at a heart-thumping pace by one-upping Satan on "Slide Devil Man Slide" and the jazz-inflected instrumental "The Devil's Guitar," running drugs in "Smuggler's Game," and cranking the steel-on-steel peal of six-string slide to the max. But he makes time for soul, too, plunging into the funky old-school R&B of "Back in My Baby's Arms" and covering Mississippi hill country matriarch Jessie Mae Hemphill's prayerful "Lord, Help the Poor and Needy" (retitled here "In the World"). Toss in the blues-rocker "Long Deep Hard and Wide" and the acoustic bluegrass thriller "Buffalo Chips"--where Chubby blazes through a sweet and breezy melody on mandolin, Dobro, and guitar--and you've got the full profile of an artist whose talent is even bigger than his considerable girth. --Ted Drozdowski

Poppa Chubby- one of the better blues players today!
I fail to agree with the majority of folks who give this particular album a 5 star rating.I do agree it does have it's moments though.I already own the "Live Big ,Bad Poppa Chubby recorded in France and it's too obvious Poppa Chub can carry the show over 2 solidly masterful discs of Blues. So perhaps this being my first purchase I am a little jaded. To my ears the second cut on this disc where Chubby indulges in the Rap Music idiom just doesn't get it although his foray into it on one song on " Live" is much better. I believe the selections on this disc" Stealin'The Devil's Guitar" are somewhat lacking. This is not to say Chubby's guitar playing is any less masterful. This man has captured any number of Blues styles and plays each with authority. The one thing I do like here is the harmonizing on the vocals whereas on the "live" disc there is little of that and altho his vocals are good 2 discs worth can be a little trying. This disc starts off with two, to my ears anyway, somewhat disorganized( or unrehearsed ) songs that do not work well but alas, as Chub is the consummate guitarist it gets better on in to this disc from there. I wish him a long and prosperous career and hope he realizes that with harmonizing vocals, or back up singers it could bring him up to a future "classic- must have" recording status in that future! He is the greatest.....

Another Decent Release By The Big Man!
This is an interestingly different blues recording from Popa Chubby. There are plenty of noteworthy guitar licks and all original tunes, with the lone exception of the cover of Jessie Mae Hemphill's "In This World". As you might expect from this unusually large man, he is all over the place on this recording. The CD opens with "Slide Devil Man Slide" with lyrics spoken in a manner which made me recall the 70's "Hot Rod Lincoln" by Commander Cody. He maintains that rather awkward style on two other tracks, "Young Guns" and "Smugglers Game." While that is style will not appeal to everyone, Popa returns to a rocking blues style on songs like "Long Deep Hard and Wide" and two up-tempo instrumentals, "Kinda Dicey" and "Buffalo Chips." To me the standout track is the mid tempo "Why I Can't Have You." Overall, this is not as good as some of Popa's earlier releases but in this day of cookie cutter blues, the originality of this composition is worth noting.

The big man with the magic fingers
Only 4 stars purely because this isn't the Chubby I have heard so much in concert. It is still very good, just another side.

(14 titres / 62mn).
