Warning: This is NOT the original
Five stars because it is a classic. I will not read it as it is a condensed version. I thought I was buying the original & will immediately do so. I will give this wonderful gem to a grandchild.Correction: Having now bought the original and tried to read it, I found it so boring and hard to read I couldn't get past the second chapter. Therefore, I decided to read the "baby version" because I am intrigued by the classic story which I never read in school or college. At 67, with a college degree in psychology and sociology, I am reading a child's version. Amazing...Having read it in about three hours total, I can highly recommend both the story and Oliver Ho's retelling. In the original, one thing I was put off by was the difficulty of reading the phonetic spelling of the slang and slurred language used by the characters. An example in point is Henry's mother's advice after he enlisted against her wishes: "If so be a time comes when yeh have to be kilt or do a mean thing, why, Henry, don't think of anything 'cept what's right, because there's many a woman has to bear up 'gainst sech things these times, and the Lord 'll take keer of us all." There are other sentences much more complicated and difficult to read. Also, in the Ho retelling, profanity is toned down to darn's and heck's. For my grandchildren's sake, I am deeply appreciative of that. I am impressed with the series because it made me read a classic I would not have read otherwise. I am so impressed that I am going to go back to the original and read it.Five stars for the series, for Oliver Ho's retelling and for Stephen Crane's story.

One of the very best "youth growing up" movie. It touches on War, but not primarily
Stephen Crane, the original author, spent a great time in Jervis and Newburg, New York inteviewing hundreds of Civil War Veterens before writting this classic novel here moved to the screen. The focus is on youth becoming men. The war is just one of thousands of challanges boys => youths => men must go though. Many times they falter and many times they manage to pick themselves up (sometimes with the help of others) and push thorough to success and a meaningful life. There are a few details in the movie that strongly suggest that it is based on the battle of Chancellorsville, early May, 1863. I fervently hope that Women will see past this movie with all men to recognize and translate the similar obstructions in their lives.

Red Badge of courage
This was a great book but I didn’t really like how the book ended. When I read it from the kindle, it said that it had 1000 pages in all but it doesn’t.

My Third Grader Loved this Book
My third grader loves history and loved this book. We have read many of the Classic Start books over the years and they have all be great. It gives younger children a chance to read the classics and get their feet wet with them in a way that is on their reading level.

Perfect!
My son has dyslexia. He is in middle school but reads at a 3-4th grade level. These books have the content that appeals to him, but are written on a level he can read. Perfect!
