Helpful Explanations
I bought this book for my young grandchildren so they could understand what is happening when they get an earache. Having that information makes it less frightening for the children when they are sick. All of the kids are very interested in how their bodies function.

There's nothing worse than an earache and there's nothing better than this book to explain it!
Have you ever heard someone say, "there's nothing worse than an earache?" When you have one, you'll surely agree with that statement! Sometimes it hurts so badly you want to cry all day and you can't sleep at night because of the pain. It's hard to hear so you'll feel like you're in a haze and a daze all at once. After you go to the doctor she'll look into your ear with an otoscope. If she says "hmmmm, looks like something is going on in here," you may get a prescription for an antibiotic or, in many cases, will have a period of "watchful waiting." If you are going to be watched, you'll probably get a little something for the pain.If you are curious about what goes on inside your ears you've come to the right place. This book covers all the bases and you can even take a look at the photograph of an eardrum. WOW! The superheroes involved in the fight to clear up that ear infection include the middle ear epithelial cells, blood vessels, neutrophils, microphages and nerve cells. When you get an earache it is because there have been "germs attacking the cells in your ears," but when your superheroes go into action, the problem won't last long! In this book you'll not only learn how the ear works and heals itself when it is infected, but you'll also be able to see actual photomicrographs of bacteria, the types of cells in your body, the surface of the cochlea and even penicillin antibiotic crystals. These magnificent photos were taken with "a scanning electron microscope" (SEM).It would be a rare child indeed that passes through childhood without at least a few earaches. This is one of the most prevalent and painful problems that plague the very young. This book is very well written and the photomicrographs are fascinating and provide a subtle introduction to microbiology. In the back of the book is a thorough glossary, an index, and additional recommended books and websites. This book and its superhero characters will wow even the most reluctant reader. Do you know what a pinna is? Hmmmm, looks like you'd better read this book!
