Stunning patents and ideas! Errata included at the end of the review
I first got this book in a library, it was so good that I purchased a copy of my own as I know it will become a reference book for many of my projects. This is my first book by this Nicky Epstein, but when I was in the library I looked through both "Knitting over the edge" and "Knitting on the edge" and "Knitted flowers" and found that "Knitting over the edge" had more projects that looked interesting to me. It also had a nice variety of over the edge, applique, ribs and cords projects where the other two books were more "specialized".I love making unique looking projects, and technique of knitting over the edge really helps me achieve this goal. The patterns may look complex, but they are not difficult and really enhance the look of your knitted pieces. The goal of the book it to show different ways of finishing and decorating the edge of the garment: ribs, fringes, loops, tussles, and more. My favorite are cords. I've never seen the unique approach the author demonstrates of decorating the edge with loops and circles made with knitted cords! I also liked the knitted applique which you see in the cover image. The book is illustrated with wonderful photos, they really make the projects and ideas in your head come alive. The book has 160 pages, and over 350 edging ideas.I really appreciated that the author showed how different techniques look when done in different yarns, it really changes the look and it is helpful to see the outcome on the pages of the book before you try it yourself. My only complaint about this beautiful book that some pages are printed in white font on pink background, and for my presbyopic eyes the contrast is too low to see well. This book is 190 pages and only 5 or 6 pages have a pink background, but unfortunately the table of content is one of them, so I have to strain when I refer to it.Most knitting books contain mistakes, and so does Knitting Over the Edge. You can find correction this way:1. Go to sixthandspringbooks web site (I located it from Vogue Knitting)2. On the bottom left you will see a link for "corrections" (just above "customer service" link)3. When you click on the link it will bring up a page which will allow you to select a book by title/author4. Then you can select "Knitting over the edge"5. I am including the content of the current errata at the end of this reviewI am working on my second project from this book and looking forward to many more!Ali Julia review--------------------------------------------------------The current errata includes:--------------------------------------------------------Cabbage Rosepage 97Row 7 Knit into front and back of st; rep from * to end--80 sts.Row 8 Purl.Bind off.-----------------------------------------------------LEAVESSee Garter Stitch Leaf in American Beauty Rose Capelet pattern, page 186.-----------------------------------------------------Open Tubespage 168Row 2 K3, *p5, k3; rep from * to end.-----------------------------------------------------American Beauty Rose Capeletphoto on page 88, instructions on page 185LEFT FRONTCast on 39 (43, 47) sts. I bought all three books on edge knitting.
There are lots of options for embellishing the edges of your projects that will take them over the top! Well worth the price!

Another Great Book From Nicky Epstein
I bought "Knitting on the Edge" ("On") because I'd borrowed it from the library and HAD to have it. I bought "Knitting Over the Edge" ("Over")sight unseen because I loved "On" so much. "Over" has the same beautiful and clear layout, instructions and photos as "On" does but it is an entirely different book. I would have loved to have had this book while I was teaching knitting just to use as exercises. It would help anyone who knits for children, teenagers and their family add the wow factor and some fun to their projects. "On" was very classic - "Over" is a carnival! I love it!

third book better than second
Before I bought the second book, I have indeed browsed through the third book "Knitting beyond the edge" in public library. However, reading the comments from the previous book review, it seems that the second book "knitting over the edge" was better and bought that instead. After reading that, I thought I still preferred the third book as the patterns, especially those for imaginative sleeve borders and cardigan button borders, are much better, creative and stylish.A bit dissapointed to have bought the second book, the section on colors, which covers more 50 pages are just simple instructions on color patterns - uninspiring and dull.I would recommend those looking for inspirations and a different edge to buy the third book by the author.

Knitting Over The Edge
One of the things I like most about Nicky's books is the beauty of the book and pictures of the designs. I ordered the paperback version, as I felt it might take wear and tear a little better when taking it back and forth to knit stores. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed! The paperback shows all designs in an ugly orange color with a pink front! It totally took away from the beauty of the book and none ofvthe samples looked appealing in this ridiculous color! It actually cheapened Nicky's talent. The hard hardback is beautiful! I can't imagine who vould have possibly picked that color, but please don't let them touch her books again!

Knitting over the edge
I have three books by Nicky Epstein. All have errors in them, but are easily corrected by a search. I went to Vogue Knitting and found corrections for her "Edge" books, and for Knitted embelishments, I went to Interweave press. All the books are great, despite the flaws. They give me tons of ideas to add to my designs. I wouldn't hesitate to buy any of the books.

One of a fabulous trilogy
I like advanced knitting techniques and tend to work in the modular way (putting various ideas together and adjust/altering patterns). Epstein's Trilogy (Knitting On/Over/Beyond the Edge) are a must-have for knitters with a taste for individuality, craft finesse and a need for a library of inspiring ideas. The layout is very clear, uncluttered and professional - yet very accessible. Each book is subdivided into topics and visual samples within chapters are presented in one colour-rage (e.g. green, orange, pink, etc.). There are variations on themes to help with practical application and each chapter is headed by a fairly useful sample bigger project the instructions to which are given at the rear of the book in careful detail. These books are not suitable for the novice or occasional knitter as much experience is generally needed in a variety of knitting skills (cables, lace, intarsia, fair isle, etc.) and many samples are very work intensive - either because of the complexity of the pattern or because of extensive 'finishing off'. And yet, a novice with aspirations may find much inspiration and motivation for further development. And at under ยฃ10 including P&P very affordable and value for money.

Gorgeous edges
This is the second book on edgings from the talented designer Nicky Epstein, the first beingย Knitting on the Edge: The Essential Collection of Decorative Borders . It takes its cue from the first, the style and layout are very similar, with a coffee table feel. There are 5 sections, unique ribs, cords, appliques and nouveau, and for each section, one full pattern is given. the shawl / cape, for which some detail is included on the front cover, is gorgeous! But most of the book is devoted to the designs for edges. Each one gives the number of stitches it is worked over, easily enabling you to match that to an ordinary pattern. The complexity goes from very very easy, to some quite complex designs. The fact that some of these are actually remarkably simple shouldn't put people off - it's the idea and design which works. There are, for example, a number of designs built from attaching a knitted cord to a plain edge, in different shapes. It rather reminds me of one of the knitting magazines' series looking at one pattern knitted in 3 different wools - the difference in effect can be amazing. There are a lot of really fun designs here - and I think this one really comes into it's own if you have children. My daughter was in raptures over the flower applique designs - perfect for a girly outfit! A number of the coloured ones will really appeal to those knitting for babies or toddler - there are ducks, hearts, butterflies....not to mention the fish with bubbles coming out. I'm tempted to do them in stripes for a "Finding Nemo" effect. And then there is the nouveau section. It's difficult to categorise these designs, but there are some gorgeous ones, particularly the cable edge which then goes over the edge to a knot.Like the first edition, this book is about releasing your inner designer, and trying something new. But what really stands out for me in this second book, is the sense of fun in the designs. There is no shortage of inspiration, and I would highly recommend this. It's something that will last a lifetime. Knitting on the Edge: The Essential Collection of Decorative Borders

Disappointing
As an experienced knitter of more years than I care to admit to, I'm always on the lookout for that "something different", and having read Nicky Epstein's first book of edgings until the print was nearly worn off the pages, I really looked forward to the arrival of this, her second outing in the world of Edgings. To say I was disapponted is actually an understatement. I was expecting something really exciting and innovative; what did I get? Pages and pages of fair-isle-type patterns, most of which can be found in various "stitch" pattern books; pages of not very interesting rib patterns with rather poor photographs.....brightly coloured yarn does not show these patterns well at all. The various knitted flowers and cords (which are then shaped into flowers etc), I found rather tedious, and not really what I would call "edging" in the true sense. This has actually put me off buying her book on knitting flowersIf you're looking for something different, then stick to her first book of edgings: "Knitting on the Edge" and give this one a miss.I was so disappointed with this book that I returned it the following day for a refund, which Amazon happily gave me.

Five stars if this had been the first, but...
If you haven't read books one or three of the series, this is a good book to help find your own creative juices. But it's the weakest of the three-book series. I had looked forward to this book after rejoicing in "Knitting Beyond the Edge", but found little that added to the first, and was quite disappointed. Had it been a stand-alone, it would have been great. As the middle of a three-book series, it leaves much to be desired. The designs simply were not up to the quality or cleverness of the others. The first book, "Knitting Beyond the Edge", was an epiphany. It gave the sense of how the ordinary person could create something original and wonderful without knowing all the ins and outs of knitting or the refined techniques. The third of the series magnified the awareness of one's ability to create something new and special (with the help of Knitting Over or Beyond, of course). But, unfortunately, the second book wasn't up to the first or third.

library addition
Always on the lookout for additions to my library for my business thought it would be a great buy. Surely was, but personally think for the more experienced knitter. Have tried the cabbage rose as an alternative for embellishment on a toy fairy I wasmaking - looked good. This is a book that I will come back to time after time and am sure I will find a use for most of the edgings,
